Fairfield University Tops River Hawks, 5-0

Box Score FAIRFIELD, Conn. (Oct. 20, 2013) – The Fairfield University Stags (10-4, 2-1 AE) showed why they are among the statistics leaders in America East, exploding for four second half goals en route to a 5-0 win over the visiting UMass Lowell River Hawks (2-14, 1-3 AE).

The River Hawks, fresh off a resounded 6-1 win over America East rival Vermont, held the Stags at bay through the first half, surrendering their first goal in the 33rd minute as Jessica Doggett cracked the scoring column with her first goal of the season. Felicitas Heinen took control in the second half, scoring the first of her three goals in the 40th minute. Heinen, who entered the game as the second leading scorer in America East, scored her three goals on just four shots in 64 minutes played.

Julie DePaeuw increased the Stags lead to 3-1, catching a pass from teammate Hillary Fitts at the right circle in the 45th minute. From that point on, Heinen took over, adding to her daily tally with goals in the 50th and 55th minutes, the first off a penalty corner and the second from high off the penalty corner.

Melissa Effertz (Oceanside, Calif.), following up on her hat trick effort against UVM, led the River Hawks with four shots while senior goalkeeper Melanie Hopkins (Harwich, Mass.) finished with 14 saves. Hopkins currently ranks second among all America East goalkeepers in saves per game and total saves.

The River Hawks will travel to Durham, NH Friday for their third straight America East contest when they meet the UNH Wildcats at 6 PM. They will close out the season on Saturday, November 2, hosting the University of Albany Great Danes at Cushing Field at 3 PM.
