RIVER HAWKS FALL TO UNH

Two Second Half Goals Prove to be the Difference

Box Score Offensive woes continue to haunt UMass Lowell women's soccer as the River Hawks dropped a 2-0 decision to the University of New Hampshire at Cowell Stadium in Durham Thursday afternoon.

UMass Lowell's record drops to 0-14-1 overall and 0-5-0 in America East Conference play. UNH improved to 4-5-6/2-0-3 and extended its unbeaten streak to seven, (2-0-5).

"We did well to keep things manageable," said Head Coach Elie Monteiro. "But when we took a mental break, we were punished. We're making it difficult on ourselves."

The Wildcats broke a scoreless battle in the second half. Meghan Ledwith gave the home team the only goal it would need in the 70th minute of play. Taking a pass in the box from Kirsten O'Neil, Ledwith one timed the ball into the right corner of the net.

The goal ended a shutout streak of 204-minutes and 32-seconds for River Hawk junior goalkeeper Jane Hatzikonstantis (Tewksbury, Mass.)

New Hampshire added an insurance goal in the 79th minute of play as the River Hawks were trying to press the attack. O'Neil found the lower left side of the net after being set up in the box.

The River Hawks had some offensive opportunities but never developed a sustained attack. Senior Sarah Raye (Salem, N. H.) drilled a shot off the post early in the scoreless first half. After that opportunities were few.

"There aren't many tactical adjustments that need to be made," said Monteiro. "We have to get out of the mode of defending. We have been reacting, not anticipating and not attacking. We need to develop a confidence and belief in ourselves."

Three games remain in the regular season, but the coach sees that as an opportunity.

"We have opportunities to work on these things," said Monteiro, "an opportunity to get better, an opportunity to instill belief."

New Hampshire outshot UMass Lowell, 16-7 overall, 5-5 on target. River Hawk GK Hatzikonstantis made three saves.

The River Hawks return to action and return home on Sunday to host Maryland Baltimore County.
