SECOND HALF SURGE TOO MUCH FOR UMASS LOWELL

Maine scores two second half goals to grab victory

Box Score A second half surge producing two goals was the difference as the University of Maine women's soccer defeated UMass Lowell, 3-1, Thursday afternoon in Orono, Me.

"Mental lapses are plaguing us," said UMass Lowell Head Coach Elie Monteiro. "Two goals on the lack of marking on the back post; it's not the first time, it is something that we have worked on in practice."

The lack of marking, twice, left Maine players unguarded at the backdoor to the River Hawk net. UMass Lowell paid the price both times.

"Everybody has some ability, everybody can kick a ball and run," said Monteiro. "Mental strength, that ability to focus for the entire 90 minutes, is the key. This will make the biggest difference in the game, but it's the hardest part of the game to learn."

The loss dropped the first year Division I River Hawks to 0-12-0 overall and 0-3-0 in America East Conference play. Maine improves to 6-3-4, 3-0-1 in the conference.

The Home team grabbed a 1-0 lead early. Jordan Pellerin scored in the sixth minute of play, the assist went to Eve L'Abbe whose cross set Pellerin up at the back post staring at a mostly empty net.

The River Hawks came out strong to start the second half. The stepped up pressure eventually forced a Black Bear miscue; the hosts put the ball in their own goal.

"We had some good runs, we applied more pressure," said Monteiro. "The more decisions you force a team to make, the more opportunities for a mistake."

Charlene Achille scored what proved to be the game winning goal, a shot inside the box, in the 64th minute. Nikki Misener got the assist.

Maine added an insurance goal in the 78th minute when Maggie Malone, stationed at the back post, redirected a shot by Joanie L'Abbe into the cage.

Maine outshot UMass Lowell 27-6 overall, 13-2 on target. River Hawk junior Goalkeeper Jane Hatzikonstantis (Tewksbury, Mass.) had ten saves. Lauren Swant had two saves protecting the Maine net.

The River Hawks return to action and return to the Cushing Field Complex, Sunday (2:00 pm), to host the University of Hartford.
