Antonio Bivins (Miami, Fla.) had a game-high 21 points, but it wasn't enough as UMass Lowell fell to Adelphi, 80-74 in a conference game at the Costello Athletic Center on Tuesday night.
The loss brings UMass Lowell to 10-4 overall and 6-4 in conference play. The River Hawks are back in action on Saturday, January 19 at Pace (3:30).
Adelphi improves to 8-8 overall on the season and 5-5 in the Northeast-10. The Panthers will host Franklin Pierce on Saturday, January 19 (3:30).
The River Hawks got off to a hot start. Sophomore G
Chad Holley (New York, N.Y.) scored seven of UMass Lowell's first nine points, giving the River Hawks a 9-2 lead early in the first half. Holley would finish the game with 15 points and five rebounds.
UMass Lowell would build on that lead later in the first half when freshman G
DJ Mlachnik (Muskego, Wisc.) found a cutting Bivins who finished at the rim, widening the River Hawk lead to 14.
UMass Lowell took a 40-30 lead into half time.
In the second half, Adelphi was able to cut the UMass Lowell lead to two after back-to-back layups by senior G RJ Samuels. Samuels finished with 11 points and three rebounds.
The Panthers completed the comeback on a three pointer by gr. G Sean Crawford. The shot gave Adelphi a one-point lead; and the lead would last the remainder of the game.
The River Hawks had a chance to come back late, but with UMass Lowell down by two with fewer than two minutes to play, junior G
Akeem Williams (Brockton, Mass.) missed a three pointer and Adelphi's Bradley Simpson followed with a quick layup on which he was fouled. Simpson would hit his free throw to complete the three-point play.
The River Hawks struggled mightily from the free throw line, shooting just 65.5% (19-29). Adelphi shot 82.4% (14-17) from the stripe.
Adelphi also outscored UMass Lowell in the paint, 34-22. However, the Panthers committed 18 turnovers to the River Hawks 14.
