UMass Lowell surrendered three second half goals and never recovered, suffering a 4-0 loss against Adelphi Saturday afternoon in a Northeast-10 Conference women's soccer clash at Motamed Field.

The loss was the third straight for the River Hawks, who slipped to 1-3-1 overall and 0-3-0 in the NE-10 entering Tuesday night's match at Saint Anselm College (7:00). Adelphi, which has only conceded two goals in six matches thus far, improved to 4-1-1 overall and 1-1-1 in the Conference.

The Panthers outshot UMass Lowell, 14-12 overall and 9-6 on frame. Junior GK Jill Carlson (Lexington, Mass.) had five saves while sophomore Sam Whitney stopped all six shots.

“We played much better in possession than we did in the last few games,” said head coach Elie Monteiro. “We settled for too many shots from long range. We made (Whitney) work a couple of times, but there was nothing substantial.

“The one positive is that we found our rhythm in possession,” Monteiro said. “We were short of opportunities we could sink our teeth into.”

UMass Lowell played its second match without senior F Keanna Santos (Lakeville, Mass.), who suffered an injury last week in training.

UMass Lowell came out firing in the first half and peppered Whitney with five shots in the first 20 minutes. Adelphi, however, withstood the pressure and countered in the 35th minute when senior F Emily Masiello opened the scoring when she took possession at the top of the box and lashed home for the lead.

Senior B Gia O'Connor (Dracut, Mass.) seemingly brought the River Hawks level in the 45th when sophomore F Brittany Russo (Danvers, Mass.) played her in on a break, but O'Connor was ruled offside.

Adelphi doubled its lead in the 55th minute when junior M Aimee Goldstein crossed to senior F Alison Gronenthal, whose shot was stopped by Carlson – but the goalkeeper was ruled to have crossed the line.

UMass Lowell suffered a disaster in the 65th when O'Connor played a ball back to Carlson, who motioned the opposite way, resulting in an own goal.

The Panthers capped the scoring in the 70th when junior F Sarah Cote headed home a corner kick by Masiello.
