Boris, MacKenzie Lead Sweep Over Pace, 6-5/2-1

Boris earns two wins; MacKenzie RBI single wins game one; Lanfranchi scoreless streak halted at 23.1 innings

Box Score Senior pitcher/designated hitter Elyssa Boris (Gardner, Mass.) earned two wins and hit a solo home run in the second game as UMass Lowell defeated Pace University, 6-5 and 2-1, Friday afternoon in a Northeast-10 Conference softball doubleheader at River View Field.

The wins were the eighth and ninth consecutive for UMass Lowell, which improved to 25-8 overall and 13-4 in the NE-10 entering Saturday twin bill against Adelphi at River View Field (12:00).

Pace slipped to 20-10 overall and 8-8 in the Conference.

Boris batted 3 for 6 two runs on the day while junior 2B Krista MacKenzie (Ipswich, Mass.) went 3 for 7 and drove home the game-winning RBI in the bottom of the seventh inning of game one. Junior CF Ashley Daniels (Medford, Mass.) batted 3 for 4 with three runs and two walks.

In the opener, UMass Lowell carried a 5-0 lead into the seventh inning behind a two-run single from sophomore 3B Ali Ferraro (Kingston, N.Y.) in the second inning and a two-run triple by freshman RF Ariana Darcy (Walkill, N.Y.) in the fifth.

The River Hawks added another run in the sixth when freshman Rachel Bullard (Worcester, Mass.), pinch running for Boris, advanced on a single by junior 1B Bri Mahoney (Billerica, Mass.) and scored on an error.
Pace, however, rallied to knot the score as junior pinch hitter Chelsea Shea came off the bench in the seventh inning with a grand slam to cut the deficit to 5-4.

The blast ended a string of 23.1 scoreless innings from freshman pitcher Courtney Lanfranchi (Burlington, Mass.).

The Setters evened the score behind an RBI single to left center by freshman SS Jeane Drury.
Daniels led off the bottom of the seventh with a single and senior SS Meagan Guy (Berlin, Conn.) walked to set up MacKenzie's game-winning hit.

Boris earned the win to improve to 14-4 as she replaced Lanfranchi who went 6.2 innings and surrendered eight hits, four earned runs and three walks while striking out one.

Freshman pitcher Kayla Hill took the loss for Pace as she hurled the final inning. Freshman Caitlin McCann went 6.0 innings and allowed seven hits, three earned runs and two walks while striking out one.

In the nightcap, Boris' solo home run in the fourth inning broke a 1-1 tie and stood the rest of the way as UMass Lowell completed the sweep.

The River Hawks opened the scoring in the third inning when Daniels doubled to left field, advanced to third on a groundout and scored on a throwing error. Pace leveled in the top of the fourth behind an RBI single from senior CF Sabrina Gonzalez.

Boris scattered five hits, three walks and an earned run while striking out two to improve to 15-4. Shea slipped to 3-3 as she allowed five hits, one earned run and two walks while striking out two.

Boris batted 2 for 3 while Daniels hit 1 for 1 with a walk to lead UMass Lowell. Gonzalez batted 2 for 4 to lead Pace.
