Freshman
Ariana Darcy (Walkill, N.Y.) batted 3 for 5 with three runs and her eighth home run of the year while senior pitcher
Elyssa Boris threw a three-hitter in the opener as UMass Lowell defeated Assumption College, 2-0 and 4-2, Saturday in a Northeast-10 Conference regular season finale twin bill at River View Field.
With the sweep, UMass Lowell improved to 33-15 overall – matching the school record for wins in a regular season (set last year) – and 19-11 in the NE-10.
The sweep also clinched a place in the NE-10 Tournament for UMass Lowell, which will await the outcomes of other NE-10 games to discover their seeding and opponent. The River Hawks can finish no worse than sixth.
Assumption slipped to 28-15 overall and 21-9 in the Conference and will finish the regular season no worse than third.
The NE-10 Tournament first round is slated for Tuesday at the sites of the higher seeds.
UMass Lowell prevailed in the opener in large part to Boris, Darcy and some slick fielding by junior 2B
Krista MacKenzie (Ipswich, Mass.), who four times robbed Assumption players of hits and/or extra bases to preserve the shutout.
Darcy batted 1 for 2 with her eighth home run of the year and third in as many games, a solo shot to lead off the third inning. UMass Lowell added another in the fifth when Guy doubled and reached home on a fielder's choice by MacKenzie.
Assumption threatened in the sixth when it had runners on first and second with one out, but the Greyhounds were unable to capitalize.
Boris improved to 19-8 on the year as she allowed three hits and no walks while striking out two. Senior Jennifer Lowrey took the loss (14-7) as she allowed three hits, three walks and two earned runs while striking out four.
In the nightcap, UMass Lowell broke a 2-2 deadlock in the fifth inning when Darcy singled, stole second and reached third on a single by MacKenzie.
MacKenzie stole second, but the throw from Assumption catcher Andrea Crowley to junior 2B Lauren Medeiros, who was playing shallow to peg Darcy at home, sailed into centerfield, enabling Darcy to score and MacKenzie to take third.
MacKenzie then scored off an RBI single by senior C
Lindsi Panarelli (Shrewsbury, Mass.) for a 4-2 lead.
Assumption opened the scoring in the first inning behind RBI singles from sophomore RF Nikki Boris (sister of UML's Elyssa) and freshman 3B Jess DiPilato, but UMass Lowell leveled matters in the bottom half as Darcy led off with a triple and scored when
Elyssa Boris reached on an error.
MacKenzie, who had walked, reached home on a sacrifice bunt by senior LF
Caelyn Ford (Dracut, Mass.).
Darcy batted 2 for 3 with two runs while sophomore
Ali Ferraro (Kingston, N.Y.) also hit 2 for 3. Freshman pitcher
Courtney Lanfranchi (Burlington, Mass.) improved to 14-7 as she surrendered 11 hits, three walks and two earned runs while striking out two.
DiPilato led Assumption, hitting 3 for 3 while sophomore CF Tanya Robidoux batted 2 for 3 and Medeiros 2 for 4. Sophomore pitcher Jenn Lattal took the loss to slip to 8-4, scattering seven hits, four runs (two earned), two walks and three strikeouts.
