River Hawks Split with AIC, 10-4/8-11

UMass Lowell caps regular season Saturday at home against Assumption

Freshman RF Ariana Darcy (Walkill, N.Y.) batted 7 for 9 with four runs, three RBI and two home runs as UMass Lowell split with American International College Thursday in a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader at River View Field.

UMass Lowell won the opener 10-4 while AIC avenged the loss in the second game, 11-8, in which both teams combined for 32 hits. With the split, the River Hawks enter Saturday's regular season finale against Assumption (12:00) with a 31-15 overall record and a 17-11 clip in the NE-10.

AIC is currently 18-24 overall and 12-16 in the Conference.

Senior LF Caelyn Ford (Dracut, Mass.) batted 4 for 7 with two runs for UMass Lowell while freshman 1B Danielle Crutcher (Londonderry, N.H.) went 2 for 4 with four RBI and two walks.

UMass Lowell, which eclipsed the single season record of 45 home runs with three in Wednesday's 13-8 loss at Merrimack, added five more home runs Thursday to add to its season total of 52.

AIC jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning of the opener with junior C Stephanie Belanger scoring on a failed pickoff attempt at third and senior 1B Sarah Calgreen later reaching off a single by junior 2B Erin St. Pierre.

Ford cut the lead in half in the second inning when she tripled and reached home on a sacrifice fly by Crutcher, who then knotted the score with a solo home run in the fourth.

UMass Lowell uncorked five runs in the fifth inning to post a 7-2 cushion. Junior CF Ashley Daniels (Medford, Mass.) led off with a solo home run while Darcy followed with a solo shot two at bats later.
Junior 2B Krista MacKenzie (Ipswich, Mass.) singled and later scored on a double by senior DH Elyssa Boris (Gardner, Mass.). Ford and Crutcher added RBI singles to cap the scoring.

Darcy batted 3 for 4 with two RBI and two runs to lead UMass Lowell while Crutcher went 2 for 2 with three RBI. Boris batted 2 for 3.

Calgreen, St. Pierre and sophomore RF Lindsay Erickson each batted 2 for 3 to lead the Yellow Jackets.

Freshman pitcher Courtney Lanfranchi (Burlington, Mass.) improved to 13-7 as she surrendered eight hits four runs (none earned) and no walks while striking out one. Senior Kristen Dolan scattered 10 hits, seven earned runs and no walks while striking out four and slipped to 8-12.

In the nightcap, UMass Lowell trailed 7-3 but cut the lead to 7-6 with three runs in the fourth inning. MacKenzie had an RBI double while Boris followed with an RBI single. Crutcher drew a walk with the bases loaded to cap the scoring.

AIC, however, came back with four runs in the fifth inning, led by a three-run shot by St. Pierre for an 11-7 lead. The River Hawks pulled one back in the sixth behind an RBI single from sophomore 3B Ali Ferraro (Kingston, N.Y.) and had runners on first and second with one out, but were unable to capitalize.

Darcy batted 4 for 5 with two runs, including her seventh solo shot of the year, while MacKenzie went 2 for 3 with two runs, two walks and two RBI. Ford, Ferraro and senior C Lindsi Panarelli (Shrewsbury, Mass.) also had two hits for UMass Lowell.

Calgreen led AIC, hitting 4 for 5 while St. Pierre went 3 for 5 with four RBI.

Boris took the loss as she allowed eight hits, four runs (three earned) and no walks while striking out one. Lanfranchi replaced Boris in the fourth inning and scattered nine hits, seven runs and two walks while striking out two.

Junior Erin Glikes, who replaced junior Elizabeth Habib after two innings, improved to 3-1 on the year as she allowed five hits, three runs and a walk in 1.1 innings. Dolan earned the save, scattering four hits, three walks, two runs and five strikeouts over the final 3.2 innings.
