UMass Lowell Splits at New Haven, 6-2/0-3

Panarelli three-run shot leads UMass Lowell in opener; River Hawks reach 30 wins

Senior catcher Lindsi Panarelli (Shrewsbury, Mass.) hit a three-run home run in the first game as UMass Lowell split with the University of New Haven, winning the first game 6-2 and dropping the second 0-3, Sunday in a Northeast-10 Conference softball doubleheader at the UNH Softball Field.

With the split, UMass Lowell stands at 30-13 overall and 16-9 in the NE-10 entering Wednesday's single game at Merrimack (4:00).

New Haven is currently 22-18 overall and 12-12 in the Conference.

UMass Lowell broke a 2-2 deadlock with four runs in the seventh inning to turn back New Haven in the opener. With two out, Ally Greene (Tewksbury, Mass.) reached on an error while junior 2B Krista MacKenzie (Ipswich, Mass.) followed with a single.

Senior DH Elyssa Boris (Gardner, Mass.) then singled to score Greene and Panarelli followed with her three-run shot, her fifth home run of the year.

In the bottom half of the inning, New Haven threatened with runners on first and second with one out, but freshman pitcher Courtney Lanfranchi (Burlington, Mass.) retired two straight batters to end the game.

Panarelli led UMass Lowell, hitting 2 for 3 with two runs while junior 1B Bri Mahoney (Billerica, Mass.) went 2 for 3 and Boris 2 for 4.

Lanfranchi improved to 12-7 as she allowed eight hits, two earned runs and a walk while striking out one.

Junior Keri Tricinelli took the loss (2-1) as she scattered five hits, one walk and no earned runs while striking out two in 4.0 innings. Tricinelli replaced sophomore Kelsey Malloy after three innings, who yielded five hits, two earned runs and two walks.

Sophomore Brandy Dianno went 2 for 2 with one RBI while senior Shannon Angher batted 2 for 3 with an RBI.

In the nightcap, junior pitcher Alana Wesche limited UMass Lowell to just three hits and two walks en route to the win.

New Haven opened the scoring in the second inning when a sacrifice fly by freshman C Gilly Childs scored freshman 1B Jess Spivey. The Chargers added two more in the fifth when sophomore 3B Lindsey Couturier hit a two-run home run.

Boris took the loss to slip to 18-6 as she allowed nine hits, three earned runs and no walks. She, along with MacKenzie and senior SS Meagan Guy (Berlin, Conn.) each had one hit for the River Hawks.

Freshman RF Sadie Redman batted 2 for 3 to lead New Haven.
