UMass Lowell Takes Two from Post University, 9-2/8-5

Darcy Goes 5 for 8 with four runs, three RBI

Freshman RF Ariana Darcy (Walkill, N.Y.) batted 5 for 8 with four runs and three RBI to lead UMass Lowell over Post University, 9-2 and 8-5, Tuesday in a non-conference softball doubleheader at River View Field.

With the wins, UMass Lowell improved to 28-9 entering Wednesday's Northeast-10 Conference twin bill against Southern New Hampshire University (3:00). The River Hawks have won 12 of their last 13 games and 15 of 17.

Post University slipped to 10-26.

Senior SS Meagan Guy (Berlin, Conn.) batted 4 for 5 with four runs and two RBI while junior 2B Krista MacKenzie (Ipswich, Mass.) hit 3 for 6 with four runs and one RBI.

In the opener, Darcy batted 4 for 4 with three runs and three RBI while freshman LF Ally Greene (Tewksbury, Mass.) also went 4 for 4 with a run. MacKenzie went 2 for 3 with two runs and one RBI while Guy went 2 for 3 with two runs.

Sophomore C Stephanie DeMartino and senior 2B Kim Bentson each led Post, hitting 2 for 3 with a run.

UMass Lowell rallied for three runs in the first inning behind a sacrifice fly from senior DH Elyssa Boris (Gardner, Mass.) and a two-run double by junior 1B Bri Mahoney (Billerica, Mass.). Post answered with two runs in the top of the third when sophomore DP Rebecca Erb hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to score DeMartino while senior 1B Cassidie Ern followed with an RBI single.

Darcy hit a two-out solo shot to highlight the second inning, and added an RBI triple in a three-run fourth inning. Greene and Mahoney each reached with singles and scored on an error.

Freshman pitcher Courtney Lanfranchi (Burlington, Mass.) earned the win to improve to 11-5 as she allowed seven hits, two earned runs and no walks while striking out two.

Junior Johanna Rice took the loss to slip to 4-12. Rice scattered 16 hits, seven earned runs and a walk while striking out four.

In the nightcap, UMass Lowell erupted for four runs in the third inning as Guy started the rally with a solo home run. Boris followed with an RBI single and senior C Lindsi Panarelli (Shrewsbury, Mass.) a two-run double to cap the inning.

Post, however, came back with four runs in the fourth, led by an RBI single by Ern as well as a run on a fielder's choice by sophomore SS Christina Udris. Senior pinch hitter Amy Mantha also added an RBI single in the inning.

UMass Lowell added one run each in the fourth and fifth and two in the sixth. Guy highlighted the fourth with an RBI double while senior DP Caelyn Ford (Dracut, Mass.) added an RBI single in the fifth.

In the sixth inning, Greene hit a sacrifice fly to score Guy, who was hit by a pitch and stole second and third. MacKenzie later scored on an RBI single by Boris.

Boris led UMass Lowell, hitting 3 for 4 with two RBI while Guy went 2 for 2 with two runs and two RBI.

Boris also earned the win to improve to 17-4, scattering nine hits, two earned runs and two walks while striking out two in 6.0 innings. Lanfranchi closed in the seventh to earn her third save of the season.

Freshman pitcher Cassandra Duffy took the loss to slip to 2-1, allowing nine hits, five earned runs and no walks.
