Box Score Senior pitcher
Tyler Toyfair (Agawam, Mass.) carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning, but came up short as UMass Lowell baseball dropped a 2-0 decision to Franklin Pierce on Saturday at LeLacheur Park.
The River Hawks dropped to 13-8-1 overall this season and 1-1-0 in the Northeast Division of the Northeast-10. The Ravens improved to 13-9-1 on the campaign and 1-0-1 in the Northeast Division. The two clubs will laced up the cleats once again on Sunday for a double-header at LeLacheur Park beginning at 12 p.m.
The River Hawks threatened in the fourth after
Geoff DeGroot (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) ripped a one-out double down the left field line to get into scoring position. The next batter,
Cam Kneeland (Rowley, Mass.), singled to center but James Roche (Arlington, Mass.) scooped the ball and fired a strike to home for the tag on DeGroot.
The Ravens flirted with scoring in the sixth as Nick LaCroix (Grafton, Mass.) record the Franklin Pierce's first hit of the day, and then found his way to third with two outs. Toyfair induced a ground out to first base to escape the jam.
Franklin Pierce broke through in the eighth, scoring twice to take the game's first lead. R.J. Going (Bay Shore, N.Y.) walked on four pitches, then was sacrificed to second and moved to third on a ground out. With two outs, Dan Kemp (Sturbridge, Mass.) singled through the left side to plate Going. A few batters later Kemp came home on an error.
Toyfair worked through eight innings to fall to 3-1 on the season. He allowed one earned run, walked five and struck out four. He was relieved
Bryant Guilmette (Hopkinton, Mass.), who tossed a perfect ninth. The Ravens' Joe Flynn (Plymouth, Mass.) threw a complete game shutout, striking out seven and walking just one.
DeGroot collected two hits on the day, the only player for either team to record multiple hits.
Prior to today's game, UMass Lowell and Franklin Pierce honored fallen teammate
Adam Keenan, who passed last summer during practice with his summer league team, the Seacoast Mavericks. The Lowell native played his freshman season at Franklin Pierce, and then transferred for his sophomore year to play at UMass Lowell.
The Keenan Family was presented with a jersey from the River Hawks, the Ravens and Lowell High School. The Seacoast Mavericks also presented the Keenan Family with the flag which flew at half mast this summer in Adam's honor.
The clubs also unveiled the inaugural Keenan Cup Trophy, which will be presented annually to the winner of the season series between UMass Lowell and Franklin Pierce.
