UMass Lowell, Saint Anselm Split

Boris with 12 strikeouts as River Hawks win opener 8-4; Late surge lifts Saint Anselm in nightcap 12-5

Box Score Freshman Ariana Darcy (Walkill, N.Y.) batted 4 for 9 with three runs and an RBI as UMass Lowell and Saint Anselm split a pair of Northeast-10 Conference softball games today at the Saint Anselm's South Fields.

UMass Lowell won the opener, 8-4, while Saint Anselm avenged the loss, 12-5, in the nightcap.

With the split, UMass Lowell stands at 13-7 overall and 3-3 in the NE-10 entering Wednesday's home opener against Bentley (3:00). Saint Anselm is currently 7-13.

In the opener, UMass Lowell broke a 1-1 tie with six runs in the sixth inning for the win. Darcy led four players with multiple hits as she batted 2 for 4 with two runs and one RBI while junior 2B Krista MacKenzie (Ipswich, Mass.) went 2 for 4 with one run and one RBI and freshman Ally Greene (Tewksbury, Mass.) 2 for 4 with an RBI.

Senior pitcher Elyssa Boris (Gardner, Mass.) hit 2 for 4 with a run while senior C Lindsi Panarelli (Shrewsbury, Mass.) went 1 for 3 with a two-run double and senior SS Meagan Guy (Berlin, Conn.) 1 for 4 with two RBI.

Boris earned the victory as she allowed six hits, two earned runs and a walk while striking out a season-high 12 batters. Freshman Alexis Bogdanovich (1-6) took the loss, scattering six hits, three earned runs and no walks while striking out one.

Panarelli started the sixth inning rally with a two-run double to score MacKenzie (single) and Boris (double). Guy followed soon after with a two-run single while Darcy and Greene also added RBI singles.

Saint Anselm rallied for three runs in the bottom half of the inning behind a three-run home run by freshman 3B Hannah Byrne, but Boris retired six of the last seven batters.
 
In the nightcap, Saint Anselm broke a 5-5 tie with five runs in the fifth inning and two more in the sixth en route to the 12-5 win. Senior 2B Kat Scafidi highlighted the inning with an RBI double while junior C Lauren Galavotti followed with a two-run single.

The Hawks added two more in the sixth inning behind Scafidi, who scored on an error, and Galavotti, who singled to right field to drive home sophomore CF Monique Gauthier.

UMass Lowell had trailed 5-2 entering the fifth, but senior DH Caelyn Ford (Dracut, Mass.) belted a three-run shot to left field to level matters.

The River Hawks stranded 11 runners and had the bases loaded and one out in the third inning, but were unable to capitalize.

Boris led the UMass Lowell bats, hitting 2 for 3 with one RBI while Guy went 3 for 4 and Darcy 2 for 5 with one run.

Galavotti batted 4 for 4 with three RBI and three runs to lead Saint Anselm while Scafidi hit 2 for 4 with three RBI and three runs. Gauthier went 2 for 3 with a run.

Boris (9-4) took the loss as she replaced freshman Courtney Lanfranchi (Burlington, Mass.) in the fourth inning, allowing five hits, five earned runs and two walks while striking out two over 2.1 innings. Lanfranchi surrendered seven hits and five earned runs and no walks over the first 3.2 innings.

Freshman P Tayla Trask earned the win for Saint Anselm to improve to 3-1, scattering two hits, two earned runs and a walk over one inning. Trask replaced junior Shannon Dalton, who allowed seven hits, three earned runs and three walks over the first four innings.
