Senior OF Matt Jacobs (Hudson, Mass.) broke the single game stolen base record with six while UMass Lowell compiled a school-record 12 in a sweep of Philadelphia University, 8-1 and 5-1, Thursday in a non-conference baseball twin bill in Santa Luces., Fla.

With the wins, UMass Lowell improved to 8-6 overall entering Friday's single game against Adelphi (11:00.). Philadelphia slipped to 5-12.

The victories were also the 299th and 300th of Head Coach Ken Harring's career. Harring posted a record of 79-109 at Saint Anselm and currently has a 221-132 clip in his eighth season at UMass Lowell.

In the opener - limited to five innings due to rain - Jacobs batted 3 for 3 with a single, double and a run while stealing six bases in six attempts. Jacobs eclipsed the single game record of five set by Hall of Fame member Steve Lane in 1990.

UMass Lowell - which stole seven bases in the first inning alone - surpassed the previous team single game record of 10, also established in 1990 in the same game.

Senior Mark Sanborn (Hopkinton, Mass.) batted 2 for 2 with three RBI and a run while freshman Jimmy Ricoy (Lowell, Mass.) went 3 for 3 (singles) and junior James Katsiroubas (Milton, Mass.) 1 for 2 with a double and two walks.

Freshman Ken McCormick led the Rams, batting 1 for 2 while Kyle DeGennaro went 1 for 3 with one RBI.

UMass Lowell jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning when Sanborn hit a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded to score Jacobs. Ricoy followed with an RBI single to score freshman Geoff DeGroot (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) and freshman Matt Sanchez (Sunrise, Fla.) drew a walk to score senior Cam Kneeland (Rowley, Mass.).

The River Hawks added two more runs in the third behind an RBI single by Sanborn, who later scored on a fielder's choice. In the fourth, Kneeland highlighted with an RBI double while Sanborn had an RBI single to cap the scoring.

Kneeland earned the win to improve to 2-0 as he allowed five hits and a walk while striking out three. Freshman Paul Goldman took the loss for Philadelphia, scattering nine hits and six walks.

In the nightcap, Katsiroubas batted 2 for 3 with one RBI and one run as UMass Lowell overcame a 0-1 deficit en route to a 5-1 victory. DeGroot batted 2 for 3 with a run.

Senior P Bryant Guilmette (Hopkinton, Mass.) earned the win as he improved to 2-1, allowing two hits and two walks while striking out two in 3.0 innings. Guilmette replaced freshman Christian Lavoie (Hopkinton, Mass.), who surrendered two hits and three walks in the first three innings.

Junior Jeffery Bohus took the loss for the Rams, scattering 12 hits and six walks over 5.0 innings.

Philadelphia jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning when DeGennaro walked and eventually scored on an error. The Rams had the bases loaded with one out, but Lavoie retired the next two batters.

UMass Lowell answered with two runs in the third inning behind RBI singles by sophomore James Hamilton (Harwich, Mass.) and junior Bryan Deuel (Webster, N.Y.).

Katsiroubas added an RBI single in the fourth inning and the River Hawks capped the scoring in the fifth behind RBI singles from Jacobs and Kneeland.

Freshman C.J. Wallowitch led Philadelphia, hitting 2 for 4 (singles).
