UMass Lowell, Florida Tech Split, 3-2/2-3

MacKenzie 4-6 with two runs; Boris improves to 6-1

Junior 2B Krista MacKenzie: 4 for 6, two runs against Florida Tech.
Box Score Junior 2B Krista MacKenzie (Ipswich, Mass.) batted 4 for 6 while senior P Elyssa Boris (Gardner, Mass.) improved to 6-1 as UMass Lowell split at Florida Institute of Technology, winning the opener 3-2 but falling in the nightcap 3-2, Monday at Nancy Bottge Field.

With the split, UMass Lowell stands at 8-3 overall entering Tuesday's single game against Limestone College (9:00). Florida Tech is currently 12-18.

In the opener, MacKenzie ripped a double to left field and scored on a double by Boris to break a 2-2 tie. Boris then retired 9 of 10 batters the rest of the way.

Boris allowed five hits, one earned run and three walks while striking out four en route to her sixth win. Graduate Brianna Barth slipped to 6-9 as she scattered eight hits, two earned runs and two walks while striking out five.

UMass Lowell stranded nine runners, including three in the fourth and fifth innings.

Senior C Lindsi Panarelli (Shrewsbury, Mass.) opened the scoring in the second inning when she singled and eventually reached home on a throwing error. Florida Tech answered in the bottom half when junior C Lindsy Dugan singled, reached third on a pair of throwing errors and scored on a groundout.

UMass Lowell took a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning when junior CF Ashley Daniels (Medford, Mass.) singled to score senior DH Caelyn Ford (Dracut, Mass.), who had doubled to left field.

The Panthers again knotted the score in the bottom half of the inning when graduate Emily Densem walked with the bases loaded to score Dugan. Boris bailed the River Hawks out of the inning when she caught senior SS Natalie Beach looking.
 
In the nightcap, junior CF Erica Tollett smacked a two-run double in the third inning and freshman LF hit a sacrifice fly in the sixth as Florida Tech overcame a 1-0 deficit and held firm the rest of the way.

UMass Lowell rallied in the seventh when sophomore 3B Ali Ferraro (Kingston, N.Y.) doubled to right center and scored on an error following a single by MacKenzie. The River Hawks, however, were unable to muster any closer.

Freshman P Courtney Lanfranchi (Burlington, Mass.) took the loss as she allowed eight hits, three earned runs and two walks with a strikeout to slip to 2-2. Freshman P Taylor Smith improved to 5-8 with the win, scattering seven hits, no earned runs and a walk while striking out eight.

MacKenzie led the UMass Lowell bats, hitting 3 for 3 with a run and a walk while Ferraro went 2 for 3.

Beach led Florida Tech, hitting 2 for 3 with a run while freshman RF Kelsey Donohue went 2 for 2 with a run.
