Welch, Bivins Lead UMass Lowell Over Clark in Exhibition, 84-58

Senior F Matt Welch (Lowell, Mass.) went 5-11 from beyond the arc as a part of his 23-point effort that helped UMass Lowell defeat Clark University, 84-58, Wednesday night in an exhibition men's basketball game at the Costello Athletic Center.
 
The game was the final exhibition of the preseason for the River Hawks. UMass Lowell next plays on Wednesday, Nov. 14 when it will open its season at home against Bentley University at 7:30 p.m.
 
Clark hung with UMass Lowell early, but, leading by one point just five minutes into the game, Welch connected on back to back three pointers, widening the River Hawk lead.
 
Junior G Marcus Armstrong led Clark with 17 points and five rebounds, keeping his team in the game for much of the first half. However, UMass Lowell outscored Clark 47-33 in the second half, leading to the 26-point victory.

"We really pressured the ball hard and uitilized out quickness and depth tonight," said UMass Lowell head coach,Greg Herenda. "Offensively Akeem (Williams) really controlled the game from the point guard position and Matt Welch got it going from behind the arc."

"Now we need to start concentrating on conference play," he added. "Every game is going to be a battle and we will need to defend like tonight every night."

Junior G Antonio Bivins (Miami, Fla.) was in on the scoring for UMass Lowell. Bivins had 14 points and five rebounds to go along with his three steals. Bivins got the crowd on its feet midway through the first half when he finished on the receiving end of an alley-oop tossed up by Williams.
 
Williams was also able to find Junior F Romeo Diaz (Methuen, Mass.) cutting to the hoop for another slam, one of his eight assists on the night.

UMass Lowell shot 54% from the field (34-63) while Clark University shot 48% (24-50). Clark was, however able to outrebound UMass Lowell with a 32-29 edge.

UMass Lowell committed only 13 turnovers to Clark's 27, and capitalized at the free throw line, shooting 70% (7-10) while Clark shot just 55.6% (5-9) from the stripe.
