Simmons, River Hawks Too Much for Saint Michael’s in 87-68 Win

Simmons matches career-high with 28 points; Fiola 12 off the bench

Senior G Bianca Simmons (Middletown, Conn.) compiled 28 points – matching her career-high – to lead UMass Lowell over Saint Michael's College, 87-68, Tuesday night in a Northeast-10 Conference women's basketball clash at the Costello Athletic Center.

With the win, UMass Lowell improved to 2-1 overall and 1-1 in the NE-10 entering Sunday's non-conference home game with Queens College (2:00).

Saint Michael's suffered its third straight loss and slipped to 1-3 overall and 0-2 in the Conference.
Simmons scored 20 of her points in the first half and converted 12 of 20 field goal attempts. She also added nine rebounds, seven assists and five steals.

Junior F Lauren Fiola (Fall River, Mass.) scored a career-high 12 points as she meshed 4 of 8 field goal attempts (2-4 from 3-point range) and grabbed five rebounds. Freshman G Melissa Frase (Tamworth, N.H.) chipped in a season-high 10 points, hitting 4 of 8 field goals (2-3 from long range).

The loss spoiled a double-double from senior F Nicole Adach, who registered 24 points and 10 rebounds while converting 10 of 19 field goals. Freshman F Megan Gaudreau added 12 points off the bench (4-8 from 3-point range).

The River Hawks committed only 10 turnovers to Saint Michael's 16 and made the most of it, outscoring the Purple Knights off turnovers. Led by Fiola and Frase, the UMass Lowell reserves outscored the Saint Michael's bench, 41-24.

UMass Lowell shot a collective .553 in the first half (21-38), in which it raced out to a 54-32 lead. With the score knotted 12-12 seven minutes in, the River Hawks reeled off 10 straight points to take a 22-12 cushion and never looked back. Simmons converted two layups while Frase hit a trey to spark the run.

The River Hawks led by as much as 24 (56-32) early in the second half, but Saint Michael's chipped away and cut the lead to 64-49 with 13:02 remaining. Gaudreau hit three 3-point field goals in the run.

UMass Lowell reacted with six straight points – a Fiola jumper, a layup by sophomore F Demetria Bell (Braintree, Mass.) and jump shot by Simmons – to post a 70-49 lead with 10:41 left to play.
