Saint Michael’s Hands UMass Lowell its First Loss of the Season, 69-60

Matt Welch’s 19 points weren’t enough, as UMass Lowell falls to Saint Michael’s at home

Box Score Senior F Matt Welch (Lowell, Mass.) scored 19 points, but it wasn't enough as Saint Michael's defeated UMass Lowell, 69-60, Tuesday night in a Northeast-10 Conference men's basketball game at the Costello Athletic Center.

The loss dropped UMass Lowell to 3-1 overall and 1-1 in conference play. The River Hawks are back in action on Wednesday, November 28 against Stonehill (7:30).

Saint Michael's improved to 1-1 overall on the season and 1-1 in the Northeast-10. The Purple Knights will travel to NYIT on November 25 (12:00).

Welch was 7-16 from the floor, and 5-10 from beyond the arc. He also pulled down six rebounds and tallied two blocks. Junior G Akeem Williams (Brockton, Mass.) chipped in with 11 points and six assists.

Sophomore G Dom Ditlefsen led the Purple Knights with 19 points and seven rebounds, while sophomore G Corey Crawford II added 15 points and six rebounds. Junior G Mike Holton Jr. tacked on 11 points and four assists.

The Purple Knights outrebounded the River Hawks 47-35, and were able to outscore UMass Lowell 28-14 in the paint.

The River Hawks took an early lead when it went on a 10-0 run just seven minutes into the game. Williams led the run for UMass Lowell, converting a three point play as he was fouled driving to the hoop, and also dishing an assist to Welch who knocked down a three to give the River Hawks a 16-15 lead. UMass Lowell would watch that lead slip away, though, as Crawford II scored eight points in the final four minutes of the half, giving the Purple Knights a 41-33 lead at the half.

UMass Lowell was able to bring it within two after back-to-back three pointers by graduate G Greg DeSantis (Trumbull, Conn.), but Saint Michael's then went on an 8-0 run to widen the lead to 58-48 with 5:36 left in the game. Sophomore F James Cambronne's five points led the Purple Knight run.

Saint Michael's shot 38.5% from the floor, while UMass Lowell shot just 36.2%. The Purple Knights also outscored UMass Lowell from the free throw line, 12-8.
