Sophomore G Casey DeSmith stopped 23 shots and sophomore D Trevor van Riemsdyk had one goal and one assist at No. 5/6 New Hampshire defeated UMass Lowell, 3-0, Friday night in a Hockey East Clash in front of 5,358 at the Tsongas Center.

The loss was the second straight for UMass Lowell, which slipped to 2-5-1 overall and 1-4-1 in Hockey East entering Sunday's clash at UMass (7:00, Mullins Center).

UNH enjoyed its third straight win – all by shutout – and improved to 7-1-1 overall and 5-1-1 in Hockey East.

Junior G Doug Carr (Hanover, Mass.) stopped 30 shots.

“There were some moments we could've capitalized, and we didn't,” said head coach Norm Bazin. “We're trying to change some things, to choose our chances more wisely, but unfortunately it didn't work out that way tonight.”

Van Riemsdyk broke a scoreless game 15:53 into the second period when he took a pass from junior F Kevin Goumas and meandered in from the right point and beat Carr to the top shelf stick side.

UMass Lowell nearly leveled 1:17 into the third when freshman F A.J. White (Dearborn, Mich.) fed junior F Joe Pendenza (Wilmington, Mass.) in the slot from behind the net, but DeSmith read it well and snuffed the attempt.

UNH doubled its lead at 10:52 of the third period when van Riemsdyk fed sophomore F Grayson Downing down the right side, who backhanded inside the near post.

The Wildcats capped the scoring with 20 seconds remaining when senior F Austin Block capitalized on a power play when he put away the rebounded shot by senior D Connor Hordowa. Junior Nick Sorkin was also credited with an assist.

“There is a level of frustration,” Bazin said. “I thought we were very good on faceoffs, but we are struggling to execute on offense.”

UNH outshot the River Hawks 33-23.
