Pendenza, McGrath Goals Lift UMass Lowell Over Colorado College

Carr with 27 saves; Home and home with BC next weekend

Box Score
Junior forward Joseph Pendenza (Wilmington, Mass.) scored on a rebound midway through the third period and junior goalie Doug Carr (Hanover, Ma.) stropped 27 shots as ninth-ranked  UMass Lowell picked up its first win of the season defeating #19 Colorado College, 3-1, at the World Arena.

The River Hawks, with the win, even their record at 1-1-1.  The loss was the first of the season for Colorado College (3-1-0).

Pendenza drilled the puck into the back of the CC net, at the 7:16 mark of the third period, after a rush by junior F Josh Holmstrom (Colorado Springs, Co.) had forced the puck to the front of the net.  CC goalie Josh Thorimbert stopped Holmstrom's bid but could get across the net front before Pendenza pulled the trigger.  Freshman A. J. White (Dearborn, Mich.) also picked up an assist, his first collegiate point.

The River Hawks never trailed in the hockey game.  Freshman Ryan McGrath (O'Fallon, Mo.) put UMass Lowell on top at the 10:27 mark of the first period in electrifying fashion.  McGrath took a pass from freshman defenseman Greg Amlong (O'Fallon, Mo.)  in the neutral zone and danced past two CC defenders just inside the blue line before snapping the puck into the upper left corner of the CC net.

Sophomore center Stephen Buco (North Providence, R. I.) finished the River Hawks scoring sliding the puck into an empty Colorado College with 30 seconds remaining on the clock.  The goal was unassisted; Buco had forced a turnover in the neutral zone after the Tigers had pulled their net minder in favor of a sixth attacker.

Carr turned in a sparkling performance at the River Hawk end of the ice.  The UMass Lowell goaltender turned aside 27 of 28 shots including a couple spectacular stops from point blank range.

Colorado College's only goal came in the second period when defenseman Aaron Harstad fired a shot through a crowd of bodies in front of the net, off the left post, and into the back of the net.  The goal tied the game at one and set the stage for Pendenza's heroics.

UMass Lowell will return home October 26th to welcome the defending National Champion Boston College Eagles to the Tsongas Center.
