Junior B Chali Beard scored the game-winning goal four minutes into overtime as Adelphi University defeated UMass Lowell, 2-1, in overtime Saturday afternoon in a Northeast-10 Conference women's soccer clash at Cushing Field.
With the loss, UMass Lowell slipped to 2-2-2 overall and 1-1-2 in the NE-10 entering Wednesday's home match against American International (7:00). Adelphi improved to 3-2-0 overall and 2-2-0 in the Conference and hosts Saint Rose Tuesday (7:00).
The match marked the third straight time UMass Lowell was brought to overtime this season.
Beard scored the winner when junior F Emily Masiello crossed from the left flank to Beard, who penetrated down the right side of the box and side-footed beneath sophomore G Jill Carlson (Lexington, Mass.). Carlson was able to get a piece of it, but the attempt trickled over the goal line.
UMass Lowell outshot the Panthers 19-9 overall and 7-5 on target. Carlson stopped three shots, including a breakaway in the final minute, while Adelphi G Sam Whitney had six saves.
Adelphi broke the ice in the 40th minute when junior F Kaitlin Monteith chipped to unmarked junior M Meghan Carey into the box, who beat Carlson inside the left post.
Immediately after, the River Hawks responded with a pair of chances. Junior F Keanna Santos (Lakeville, Mass.) broke free down the left flank and uncorked a right-footed blast which rung the far post.
The River Hawks grabbed the clearance on the right side, where junior F Julia Donigian (Wakefield, Mass.) crossed to freshman F Emily Bracken (Bridgewater, Mass.), whose header at the near post was wide left.
UMass Lowell's momentum carried into the early minutes of the second half and it paid off three minutes in. Junior M Jenna Costa (Attleboro, Mass.) found space on the left side and drove deep into the box where she crossed to Santos unmarked, who casually touched inside the right post to level matters.
The River Hawks owned the run of play throughout the second half and kept Whitney on edge. They nearly got the game-winner in the 81st when freshman F Haley Benson (Winthrop, Mass.) sent a through-ball to Santos on the right, whose blast was tipped off the crossbar by Whitney.
UMass Lowell was denied by the woodwork again in the 87th when Santos threaded a pass to freshman F Brittany Russo (Danvers, Mass.), whose left-footer caromed off the far post and agonizingly rolled along the goal line and out of play.
Carlson was at her best when Monteith nearly stole the win in the final minute of regulation for the Panthers. Junior B Sally Leahy released Monteith on a breakaway, whose right-footed attempt was parried left by Carlson's diving stop.
