The River Hawk softball team was silenced by Florida Tech (12-11), 8-0 and 3-0, in a doubleheader in Melbourne, Fla. on Wednesday afternoon. UMass Lowell mustered just five hits on the day compared to 17 by the Panthers, while the pair of losses evened their season record to 7-7.
In the first clip of the day, the River Hawks fell into a 4-0 deficit in the second and the Panthers continued to steadily bring in four more runs over the next three innings. UMass Lowell grabbed a pair of hits from junior shortstop Meagan Guy (Berlin, Conn.) and sophomore catcher Katie Mazure (Burlington, Conn.), but were unable to convert to any runs.
River Hawk pitching duties were split between Rachel Schafler (Floral Park, N.Y.) and Sammy Macy (Tewksbury, Mass.) with Schafler throwing 3.0 innings and allowing five runs (two earned) on five hits. She struck out one and walked two. Macy relieved in her in the fourth and pitched 1.1 innings, allowing four runs on three hits.
In the second contest of the day, Elyssa Boris (Gardner, Mass.) threw the complete game, allowing three runs on eight hits. She struck out one in the losing effort and currently stands at 6-4 on the year.
The Panthers struck early, getting on the board with their first run in the bottom of the first, but the River Hawks held them scoreless through the next four innings. They were unable to generate any offense of their own and Florida Tech tacked on another pair of insurance runs in the sixth to go up 3-0. The Panthers held on to that score through the end of the game, completing their sweep of UMass Lowell.
Boris went 2-3 on the afternoon while Caelyn Ford (Dracut, Mass.) collected the other UMass Lowell hit in the game.
The River Hawks return to action against Saint Thomas Aquinas at 11:30 tomorrow morning and follow up with a contest against Bridgeport at 3:30 p.m.
