Senior G Dipanjot Singh (Evanston, Ill.) came off the bench to score a career-high 25 points and dish four assists as UMass Lowell defeated Concordia College, 109-81, Saturday afternoon in a non-conference men's basketball clash at the Costello Athletic Center.
The win was UMass Lowell's third in four games as the River Hawks improved to 7-4 overall and host American International College Tuesday at 7:30. Concordia slipped to 5-7 overall.
"After 21 days off we had very little rust. We played at an extremely high level of intensity for 40 minutes," said head coach Greg Herenda. "Dipanjot scored 25 points but he came off the bench and did so many little things for us as well. When you add Matt and Akeem to the equation, this group is very potent offensively."
Singh converted 6 of 9 field goal attempts - including 3 of 4 from 3-point range - and 10 of 14 free throws. Sophomore G Akeem Williams (Brockton, Mass.) added 23 points and six assists as he converted 7 of 14 field goal attempts, 5-9 from long range and all four free throw shots.
Junior F Matt Welch (Lowell, Mass.) scored 19 points on 6-11 field goal shooting (5-9 from 3-point range) while sophomore F Antonio Bivins (Miami, Fla.) chipped in 14 points and nine rebounds, hitting 4-7 field goals and 6-8 free throws.
Senior G Robbie Walton (South Boston, Mass.) added 10 points and four assists.
Junior F Argelix Gil (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led the Clippers with 23 points and eight rebounds as he converted 8-16 field goals. Freshman G Jason Alleyne (New Rochelle, N.Y.) added 19 points (8-15 FG shooting) while sophomore G Norman Pope (Washington, D.C.) chipped in 12 points, six assists and five rebounds.
UMass Lowell shot .533 for the game (32-60), including .700 in the pivotal first half (21-30), in which they raced out to a 67-41 cushion. Williams scored 16 of his points in the first half.
Concordia shot .484 for the game (31-64), including .452 in the first half (14-31) and .515 in the second (17-33).
The River Hawks forced Concordia into 17 turnovers while committing only 11 which led to a 25-13 edge in points off turnovers. Led by Singh and Bivins, the River Hawks also outscored Concordia's bench, 48-20.
UMass Lowell was also on the mark from 3-point range - 15 for 26 (.577) - marking season-highs for accuracy and total treys in a game. Concordia struggled to a 4-16 clip (.250).
The River Hawks also enjoyed a stellar showing at the free throw line, hitting 30 of 42 attempts while Concordia shot 15-22.
