Box Score | Behn: 'They shot lights out'
Sophomore G Katie Duma and junior G Ana Cruz each scored 20 points as Holy Family defeated UMass Lowell, 87-62 Sunday in the second round of the Northeast-10 Conference/Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Women’s Basketball Challenge at the Costello Athletic Center.
With the loss, UMass Lowell slipped to 1-1 and opens its NE-10 schedule Wednesday at No. 2 Bentley (5:30). Bentley was a 76-42 winner over Felician in the earlier matchup.
Holy Family, ranked No. 18 in the WBCA Division II Preseason Poll, improved to 1-1.
Sophomore G Nyachuol Biliew (Portland, Maine) led the River Hawks with 14 points while junior G Erika Sjoberg (Stockholm, Sweden) chipped in 10 points in seven minutes off the bench, all in the second half.
UMass Lowell was without senior F Sha'nay Bushner (Akron, Ohio) and junior C Brianna Wilson (Lowell, Mass.) for the majority of the first half as each drew their third fouls early on.
The Tigers shot .528 for the game (28-53), led by Duma and Cruz, who shot a combined 13-17 from the field. Sophomore F Maggie Serratelli came off the bench to score 18 points and dish five assists while shooting 5-7 from the field (4-5 from 3-point range) and 4-4 from the free throw line.
Junior C Erin Mann chipped in 12 points and seven rebounds for Holy Family on 5-9 FG shooting.
Holy Family also had an edge from long range as they converted 13-26 attempts from the 3-point arc, opposed to UMass Lowell’s 10-28. Both teams were prone to turnovers Holy Family with 25, UMass Lowell with 21 – but the Tigers capitalized, outscoring UMass Lowell off mistakes, 25-17.
The Tigers also outscored UMass Lowell in the paint, 28-10.
Holy Family led 44-24 at the break and never let UMass Lowell within 18 points the rest of the way.
