Junior M Jenna Costa (Attleboro, Mass.) knotted the score in the 75th minute and set up the winner by junior F Julia Donigian (Wakefield, Mass.) in the 99th as UMass Lowell defeated Le Moyne, 2-1, in extra time Saturday in the Northeast-10 Conference regular season finale at Cushing Field.
The win halted a two-match slide for UMass Lowell, which improved to 11-4-2 overall and 10-3-2 in the NE-10, good for third place and the No. 3 seed in the NE-10 Tournament.
The River Hawks are awaiting the outcome of the Pace-Merrimack match (5:15 p.m.) to determine NE-10 Tournament pairings.
Le Moyne ends the season 4-13-0 overall and 3-12-0 in the Conference.
Le Moyne opened the scoring in the 26th minute when a cross by junior F Christie Morano from the left side deflected off the head of a defender to sophomore M Kate Deasy, who settled and tucked home inside the left post.
After the half, Le Moyne nearly went ahead 2-0 when Morano got free on the left side of the box and tried to beat sophomore GK Jill Carlson (Lexington, Mass.) to the near post. Carlson read it well and parried the shot wide right.
UMass Lowell enjoyed the run of play thereafter and peppered the Le Moyne defense with shots. The pressure paid off in the 75th when junior B Taylor Hartmann (Feeding Hills, Mass.) dropped off for Costa on the top right side of the box, which Costa deftly lofted over the reach of Le Moyne GK Felicia Tynan.
Costa almost scored the go-ahead goal on the next play when she fired a deflected shot from the top of the box, which Tynan did well to glove away.
UMass Lowell’s pressure continued into extra time when freshman F Brittany Russo (Danvers, Mass.) met a cross by junior M Amy Cramer (Marlborough, Mass.) from the right side at the far post, but Tynan read it well and was there for the save.
A minute later, however, sophomore B Gia O’Connor (Dracut, Mass.) sent a clearance back into the Le Moyne box to Costa, who freed herself near the right endline and crossed to Donigian who touched into an empty net.
UMass Lowell outshot Le Moyne 23-6 overall and 11-3 on target. Carlson had two saves for UMass Lowell while Tynan stopped nine shots for the Dolphins.
