Box Score

Freshman GK Micaela Butlin (Milton, Mass.) stopped six shots in her collegiate debut as UMass Lowell and C.W. Post drew 0-0 in double overtime Thursday night in the first round of the American International College Women’s Soccer Classic.

With the draw, UMass Lowell stands at 0-0-1 and meets the University of Bridgeport Saturday night at 7:30 in the second round. Bridgeport, ranked No. 18 in the NSCAA Division II preseason poll, suffered a 3-1 loss to the host Yellow Jackets earlier Thursday.

The River Hawks outshot the Pioneers 16-9 overall and 10-6 on target. Junior GK Allie Weiser stopped 10 shots for the Pioneers.

“Both teams had opportunities,” said Head Coach Elie Monteiro. “We certainly defended well, we combined well. We did a lot of good things. This was a high-level college game. It was good to get a shutout under our belt for our freshman goalkeeper and new back four.”

Both teams had chances to score, particularly UMass Lowell in the second half. In the 59th minute when sophomore F Taylor Hartmann (Feeding Hills, Mass.) took a throw-in on the left side, turned and struck only to see her attempt carom off the to right corner of the goal.

Another opportunity came in the 76th when sophomore F Keanna Santos (Lakeville, Mass.) took a cross at the top of the six-yard box from Hartmann and sidefooted agonizingly wide left. With five minutes remaining in regulation, freshman M Kate Masson (Merrimack, N.H.) combined well with Hartmann on the right side but her one-timed shot off an overlap sailed over the bar.

C.W. Post had a 6-1 edge on corner kicks, including two in the final minutes. In the 109th, sophomore M Prudence Rydstrom nearly converted off a corner from junior D Tove Eriksson, but the attempt was snuffed by Butlin.
