First-Half Flurry Costly in 2-0 loss to Franklin Pierce

Franklin Pierce University scored two goals just 1:26 apart midway through the first half to defeat UMass Lowell, 2-0, Tuesday night in a Northeast-10 Conference men's soccer clash at Cushing Field.
With the loss, UMass Lowell slipped to 1-3 overall and 0-1 in the NE-10 entering Saturday's match at Assumption (12:00). Franklin Pierce improved to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in the Conference and visits New Haven Sunday at 1:00.
The Ravens pressured with three chances within a seven-minute window early on. In the 12th, sophomore M Amory Houghton (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) took possession of a failed clearance and tapped home, but his effort was cleared off the line by sophomore D Evan Spann (Acton, Mass.).
In the 14th, graduate Shaun Taylor (Isle of Wight, England) unleashed an attempt from the top left side of the box which elicited a diving save from freshman GK Chris Maierle (Wantagh, NY). Junior M Tom Reilly (Wallasey, England) sent junior F Victor Goncalves (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) on a breakaway in the 17th minute with a volley from the back, but Goncalves' shot soared past the right post.
Franklin Pierce opened the scoring in the 23rd minute when junior M Paul Latif (Newcastle, England) steered a left-footed free kick from the top of the box inside the right post. The free kick was awarded when junior M Diego Tabares (Seekonk, Mass.) was tripped while penetrating into the UML box.
Just 1:26 later, Houghton shot from 20 yards out, but his attempt deflected off a River Hawk defender to the foot of Goncalves, who instinctively tucked home into the low left corner.
Junior Matheus Candido (Lowell, Mass.) had the first of two chances to cut the lead in half in the 30th minute when he bicycled home a deflected clearance right to the grasp of junior GK Vinny Papageorgiou (Wilmington, Mass.).
Two minutes later, freshman D Neil Lavanchy (Scituate, Mass.) attempted an inswinging shot from the left flank which Papageorgiou parried right.
Shots were even at 10-10 overall and 5-5 on target. Maierle had two saves while Papageorgiou stopped all five.
