Senior Brendan Livingston (Westford, MA) placed in a tie for sixth with rounds of 74 and 77 to lead the UMass Lowell golf team to third place at the Louisburg College Hurricane Fusillade Challenge Sunday at The River at Lake Royale Golf Club.

Livingston led four UMass Lowell players who shot in the 70s for 36 holes as the River Hawks compiled a 309-318--627 to place behind the host Louisburg College (301-308--609) and Wake Technical Community College (304-312--616). Johnson Community College (315-317--632) placed fourth and was followed by North Carolina Wesleyan (330-334--664) and Shenandoah University (401-406--807).

Livingston, who was seven-over par for the two rounds, trailed medalist Thorudur Gissurarson of St. Andrews Presbyterian College, who shot 71-71--142, by nine strokes.

The tournament drew 53 players representing eight colleges.

"Our southern trip against some talented schools was valuable in both getting us prepared for the spring tournament schedule within our region and in giving some of our non-starters the chance to show what they could do and earn their way onto our traveling team this weekend," said UML Head Coach Gary Mucica. "It should be very competitive within our team for starting spots throughout the spring."

Junior Thomas Ayala (East Taunton, MA) placed in a tie for ninth as he scored a 76-77--153 while sophomore Brandon Robinson (East Hampstead, NH) carded a 78-79--157 to place in a tie for 13th. Junior Anthony Ullo (Leominster, MA) and freshman Greg Malo (Seekonk, MA) shared 21st place. Ullo shot a 78-80-158 while Malo carded consecutive rounds of 79 (158).

Freshman Travis Kellegrew (Chelmsford, MA) placed in a tie for 27th with a 78-84--162 while senior Patrick Bean (Fitchburg, MA) shot an 81-85--166 to place tied for 31st.

UMass Lowell enters the Goldey-Beacom Invitational Sunday through Tuesday in Newark, DE.
