River Hawks in Second After NE10 Championship First Round

Oct. 4, 2010

Graduate Patrick Bean (Fitchburg, Mass.) shot a two-over 74 for the first round to lead UMass Lowell to second place after round one of the 2010 Northeast-10 Conference Golf Championship at the En-Joie Country Club.

The River Hawks shot a collective 309 and trail only Adelphi, which sits in first place with a 298. American International, Bentley and Saint Rose are currently tied for third place with a 310.

“It’s going to be a real dogfight tomorrow,” said UML Head Coach Gary Mucica. “We’ve put ourselves into good position after day one. We’re eyeball to eyeball on the last threesome with Adelphi and AIC. It’s been pretty exciting and we’re hoping we can get it done tomorrow.”

In five previous appearances in the NE-10 Championship, UMass Lowell’s best finish was in 2008 when it finished runner-up.

Bean is currently tied for fourth and is one of three River Hawks in the top 20 places. Senior Thomas Ayala (East Taunton, Mass.) is tied for 11th with a four-over 76 while freshman Steve Aghiarian (Medford, Mass.) is tied for 20th with a 79.

Sophomore Travis Kellegrew (Chelmsford, Mass.) carded an 80 to place tied for 26th while senior Anthony Ullo (Leominster, Mass.) is tied for 51st with an 86.

Stuart Pulkinen of Adelphi is the leader with a one-under 71 while Saint Rose’s Matt Horton and Pace’s Kent St. Charles share second place with a 73.

Second round play resumes Monday morning at 8:15.

Next Saturday, the River Hawks enter the Southern New Hampshire Invitational at the Country Club of New Hampshire.
