UMass Lowell battled back from an 0-2 deficit but fell just short as Southern Connecticut State University prevailed, 3-2, Saturday afternoon in a Northeast-10 Conference volleyball match at the Costello Athletic Center.
Game scores favored the Owls 25-23, 25-23, 23-25, 22-25, 15-3.
The loss was the second straight for the River Hawks, who slipped to 9-9 overall and 4-4 in the NE-10 entering Wednesday's clash at Saint Anselm (7:00).
The Owls improved to 11-9 overall and 4-5 in the Conference and visit New York Institute of Technology Monday at 7:00.
Southern Connecticut raced out to a 2-0 lead and led 20-15 in the third set before UMass Lowell regrouped for five straight points to knot the score at 20-20 and eventually win 25-23.
The River Hawks captured the third set, 25-22, but the Owls scored the first 10 points of the tiebreaker to prevail, 15-3.
Senior MH Sarah Coscia (Pittsfield, Mass.) led UMass Lowell with 20 kills, seven blocks and six digs while senior OH Vicky Wong (Tewksbury, Mass.) added 12 kills and 10 digs. Sophomore setter Kristina Wiltjer (San Diego, Calif.) dished out 47 assists and also had 12 digs, four blocks and three kills.
Freshman libero Carolyn Eddy (Dracut, Mass.) led the defense with 15 digs. Senior OH Jillian Hadder (Yucaipa, Calif.) chipped in nine kills and nine digs.
Junior OH Megan Lyons (Cold Spring, N.Y.) led the Owls with 20 kills and 19 digs while junior OH Megan Hiss (Trinidad, Colo.) chipped in 14 kills, seven digs and four blocks. Senior OH Broghan Miller (West Hartford, Ct.) added 11 kills and six blocks while freshman OH Lauren McVey (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) chipped in 10 kills and 16 digs.
