Overtime Goal Lifts Saint Anselm Over UMass Lowell, 2-1

Sophomore M Jackie McEvoy scored 42 second into overtime to lead Saint Anselm College over UMass Lowell, 2-1, Saturday afternoon in a Northeast-10 Conference match at Melucci Field.
The loss was the second straight for the River Hawks, who slipped to 6-7-1 overall and 6-6-0 in the NE-10 entering Tuesday’s match at Southern Connecticut (7:00).
Saint Anselm improved to 5-7-1 overall and 5-6-1 in the NE-10.
The loss was also the second straight in overtime for the River Hawks, who suffered a 2-1 setback Wednesday night at Merrimack.
McEvoy scored the winner on the first play of extra time. Senior M Jennifer Pearl launched a corner kick which freshman GK Micalea Butlin (Milton, Mass.) punched in the air, only for McEvoy to gather and poke home.
UMass Lowell attacked from the kickoff and tested Saint Anselm goalkeeper Jackie Cooney four times in the opening 18 minutes, but was unsuccessful.
“I thought we should have been ahead one-nil in the first half,” said UML Head Coach Elie Monteiro. “Saint Anselm was certainly motivated on their senior day. At they end of it all, they certainly deserved to win the game. I don’t think we did it enough to win. It was one of those days.”
The Hawks opened the scoring in the 29th minute when junior F Teresa Vercollone converted off a deflection from a teammate, the spin of which finding its way into the net.
UMass Lowell had a 9-6 edge on shots in the first half, but the Hawks turned it around in the second with a 7-4 advantage. Vercollone nearly doubled Saint Anselm’s lead in the 51st minute when her attempt hit the post and trickled over the endline.
The River Hawks leveled in the 83rd minute when freshman Sarah Raye (Salem, N.H.) lofted a shot from roughly 30 yards out just under the bar and over the reach of Cooney.
Saint Anselm had a 14-13 edge on shots, but the River Hawks posted a 6-3 advantage on frame as well as a 7-5 edge on corner kicks.
Butlin stopped one shot while Cooney had five saves.
