First Half Goal Holds as Southern Connecticut Blanks UMass Lowell, 1-0

Freshman M Suzane Pires scored the lone goal in the 38th minute as Southern Connecticut State University defeated UMass Lowell, 1-0, Tuesday night in a Northeast-10 Conference women’s soccer clash at Jess Dow Field.
The loss was the third straight for UMass Lowell (all by one goal), which slipped to 6-8-1 overall and 6-7-0 in the NE-10. The River Hawks host Pace University Saturday at 1:00 and wrap the regular season next Wednesday (Oct. 27) at Assumption (7:00).
The win was the fourth in five matches for Southern Connecticut, which improved to 8-4-3 overall and 6-4-3 in the Conference.
“Southern Connecticut is a very good team,” said UML Head Coach Elie Monteiro. "We played them on their home field where they just know how to zip the ball around and how to work the space. It was their senior night and they were extra motivated.”
Senior F Lindsay Stanton set up the winner when she took possession out of a scramble and passed to an oncoming Pires who slotted home from the left side of the box.
The Owls outshot UMass Lowell 14-7 overall and 7-5 on frame. “We had very little possession, and when we had it they did a good job of putting a lot of pressure on us,” Monteiro said. “I think we tried to force things a little bit, maybe played too direct instead of putting an extra pass on the ball.”
Freshman GK Micaela Butlin (Milton, Mass.) had six saves while senior Katie DiDio stopped five shots for the Owls.
