Audio Recap - Opening Weekend Sweep

Sammy Macy (Tewksbury, MA) netted both goals in No. 2 UMass Lowell’s 2-0 shutout victory over No. 3 Indiana University (PA) in non-conference action on Sunday afternoon at Cushing Field.

Macy’s first goal came in the 22nd minute of play (13:13) after grabbing a rebound from a Kayla Littig (Carver, MA) shot off the pipe.

Before Macy but UMass Lowell on the board, Ashley Smith (Killingworth, CT) single-handedly stopped a two-on-one IUP breakaway halfway through the first, putting a hault to the Crimson Hawks’ best scoring opportunity of the first half.

The River Hawks maintained possession through most of the second half, but Laura Sullivan (Norwood, MA) helped keep the UMass Lowell lead at one by going head-to-head with IUP standout Laura Paannaker (Bosch En Duin, the Netherlands) in the River Hawks’ defensive zone. Sullivan cleared the ball, preserving the lead with 14 minutes left in regulation.

Katie Enaire (Amesbury, MA) had a few good looks, creating multiple opportunities for the River Hawks, but was not able to convert any of her six shots in the game.

Macy went on to cushion the UMass Lowell lead, finding her way to the back of the cage after a solid pass from Jaci Moulton (Baldwinville, MA) off of a penalty corner in the 61st minute of play (9:40).

The River Hawks outshot IUP 21-4 in the game, while Amy Carbon (Bellingham, MA) saved the only shot she faced. UMass Lowell also held a 14-2 advantage on penalty corners in the game.

The River Hawks return to action on Wednesday evening at 7:00 p.m. against the Merrimack Warriors at home on Cushing Field.
