LOWELL, Mass. - Tim Keene (Berlin, N.H.) and Matt Jacobs (Hudson, Mass.) each had three hits for the River Hawks, but Franklin Pierce defeated UMass Lowell, 10-3, Sunday afternoon in Northeast-10 baseball action at LeLacheur Park.
The Ravens have won four straight and swept the weekend series with the River Hawks. FPU improves to 33-15 overall and 24-6 in conference play. The River Hawks have lost four straight. They fall to 24-19 overall and 15-15 in conference play.
Franklin Pierce scored 10 runs on 15 hits. UMass Lowell had three runs on four hits. Just three of the 10 runs allowed were unearned as a result of five errors.
The Ravens jumped out to an early lead scoring four runs in the first two innings - three in the first and one more in the second. All three first inning runs were unearned.
The River Hawks got on the board with three unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth. Peter Onorato (Clarence Center, N.Y.), Jacobs and Mark Wiggins (Rochester, N.H.) each singled in the fourth.
Franklin Pierce answered with four runs in the top of the fifth. All four runs were unearned. Derek Ingui (Sterling, Mass.) had the big hit in the inning with a two-run single through the right side.
The Ravens added to their lead with single runs in each the sixth and eighth innings.
Ted Lerud (Hampden, Mass.) and Mike Dowd (East Bridgewater, Mass.) each had three hits for the Ravens. Ben Benigno (Trumbull, Conn.) was 2-for-4 with three RBI. Ingui and Cliff Hicks also had two hits for FPU.
Keene and Jacobs were the only River Hawks with three hits.
Tom Cote (Swanzey, N.H.) got the win on the mound for Franklin Pierce. He improved to 9-2. Cote allowed three unearned runs on eight hits in seven innings.
Bryant Guilmette (Hopkinton, Mass.) took the loss for UML. He allowed eight runs (one earned) on seven hits in 4.2 innings. He walked two and struck out two.
The River Hawks next play Wednesday in the first round of the Northeast-10 playoffs. Time, date and opponent will be announced at the completion of Sunday's games. The Ravens, the top seed in the NE-10 tournament, play Friday in the NE-10 tournament.
