
Baseball: Onorato, UMass Lowell Downs Southern Connecticut, 3-2, in NE-10 Playoffs

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Peter Onorato's (Clarence Center, N.Y.) two-out double in the top of the ninth inning lifted UMass Lowell past Southern Connecticut, 3-2, Wednesday afternoon in the first round of the Northeast-10 baseball playoffs at The Ballpark at Southern Connecticut.
The River Hawks snapped a four game losing streak to advance to the second round of the 2009 Northeast-10 baseball tournament. They improved to 25-19.
UMass Lowell plays second seeded Assumption Friday at 7:00 p.m. at Dr. Pappas Field on the campus of Franklin Pierce.
The Owls had their three-game win streak snapped and are eliminated from the NE-10 tournament. They fall to 25-20 on the year.
Each team scored two runs in the first eight innings. The River Hawks plated a pair in the fifth. The Owls scored a run in the sixth and one in the seventh. Each team had six hits on the day.
Taylor von Kriegenbergh (Stoneham, Mass.) got the River Hawks on the board with a one-out single in the fifth. Mark Wiggins (Rochester, N.H.) made it a 2-0 game with an RBI fielder's choice.
Southern Connecticut chipped away at the UMass Lowell lead with single runs in each the sixth and seventh innings. Kyle Rosadino (Berwyn, Pa.) got the Owls on the board when doubled and scored in the sixth.
Ryan Geffert (Plymouth, Pa.), who singled to open the seventh, scored the tying run on an error.
Jared Notargiacomo (Newburyport, Mass.) and Onorato answered for the River Hawks in the ninth. Notargiacomo singled with two outs and came around to score on Onorato's double to left center.
Jack Leathersich (Beverly, Mass.) got the win for the River Hawks in relief. He pitched two scoreless innings out of the bullpen, striking out two and allowing just two hits.
Ted Haley (Cranston, R.I.) got the start for UML. He allowed just two runs (one earned) on four hits over seven innings. He struck out six and walked just two.
Ed Bethke (Branford, Conn.) got the loss for Southern Connecticut. He allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits over 8.2 innings. He struck out five.
Tournament host Franklin Pierce hosts New Haven at 4:00 p.m. The River Hawks-Greyhounds game follows at 7:00 p.m.
