
Baseball: Franklin Pierce Downs UMass Lowell, 5-2; Completes Doubleheader Sweep

RINDGE, N.H. - Tim Keene (Berlin, N.H.) and Peter Onorato (Clarence Center, N.Y.) each had three hits for the River Hawks, but Franklin Pierce defeated UMass Lowell, 5-2, Saturday afternoon in Northeast-10 baseball action at Dr. Pappas Field.
The Ravens swept Saturday's doubleheader and improve to 32-15 overall and 23-6 in the NE-10. FPU won game one, 1-0, in 10 innings. The River Hawks have dropped three straight. They fall to 24-18 overall and 15-14 in conference play.
Franklin Pierce took an early lead with a run in the second and never trailed in the game. The Ravens added to their lead with two more runs in each the fifth and sixth innings.
Kevin Rivers (Bristol, Conn.) and Steve Carr (Nahant, Mass.) each had three hits for the Ravens. Rivers was 3-for-5, while Carr was 3-for-3 with a run and an RBI. Mike Dowd (East Bridgewater, Mass.) went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.
The River Hawks got on the board with a run in the sixth and one more in the eighth. Keene and Onorato each had three hits for UML. Luke Wallace (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) was 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Alex Szymanski (Londonderry, N.H.) picked up the win on the mound for Franklin Pierce. Szymanski allowed just three hits over five innings. He struck out seven.
Rob Nicholas (Northboro, Mass.) worked the final 1.2 innings to earn his ninth save. He allowed three hits, but did not allow a run.
Jack Leathersich (Beverly, Mass.) got the loss for UMass Lowell. Leathersich allowed five runs on 11 hits over six innings on the mound. He struck out four.
The Ravens clinched the 2009 Northeast-10 regular season championship with the two wins.
UMass Lowell and Franklin Pierce conclude their three-game weekend series Sunday at LeLacheur Park at 11:00 a.m. Sunday is the final home game for UML seniors Tim Keene and Graeme Clohosey (Derry, N.H.).
