Lajoie Named UPS Student-Athlete of the Week

April 29, 2009

Stacey Lajoie, a senior from Gardner, MA, was named the UPS Student-Athlete of the Week Tuesday after leading the UMass Lowell softball team to a 4-2 clip to cap the 2009 season.

Lajoie batted .500 (10 for 20) with 12 runs, seven stolen bases (in seven attempts), six RBI and four walks as UMass Lowell swept Stonehill (6-2, 6-2) and Saint Michael’s (9-1, 8-3) before wrapping the season Sunday with heartbreak losses to American International College (2-0, 10-8/10 innings).

Lajoie opened the week Thursday hitting 4 for 6 with five runs, three RBI and three stolen bases in the sweep of Stonehill. She followed with identical numbers in the wins over Saint Michael’s on Saturday.

In the losses to AIC, Lajoie came back from an 0 for 3 effort in the first game with a 2 for 5, two-run showing in the nightcap – including a single and a run in the seventh inning – which started a four-run rally to knot the score at 8-8 and force extra innings.

Lajoie ended her career at UMass Lowell the all-time leader in home runs (21) and games played (208).

UMass Lowell ended the season with a 10-31-1 overall record and a 9-18-1 clip in the NE-10.
