C.W. Post Sweeps UMass Lowell, 6-0/6-0

Sophomore pitchers Christina Berardi (Raynham, MA) and Sarah Kiser (Cooper City, FL) gave up a combined four hits as C.W. Post defeated UMass Lowell, 6-0 and 6-0, Friday afternoon in a non-conference softball doubleheader at River View Field.

With the losses, UMass Lowell slipped to 4-23-1 entering Saturday’s home twin bill against Stonehill (1:00, weather permitting). C.W. Post improved to 21-11 and visit Southern New Hampshire Saturday at 12:00.

In the opener, Berardi (10-5) allowed one hit and one walk while striking out five for the win.

Junior SS Christie Softy (Floral Park, NY) batted 3 for 4 while freshman 2B Kerry Fisher (Barto, PA) batted 2 for 4 with three RBI.

Freshman pinch hitter Meagan Guy (Berlin, CT) broke up Berardi’s no-hit bid in the sixth inning when she beat out a single to shortstop.

The Pioneers opened the scoring in the first inning when junior CF Melissa Medina (Levittown, NY) scored on an error and Kerry Fisher added an RBI single. C.W. Post added two more in the fourth behind an RBI double from junior LF Katie Fisher (Barto, PA) and an RBI single from freshman C Kristen Morcone (Milford, MA).

Kerry Fisher added a two-run single to highlight the seventh inning.

Sophomore P Nicole Monroe (Townsend, MA) took the loss as she slipped to 1-6, scattering five hits, four runs (two earned) and one walk while striking out two.

In the nightcap, Medina went 3 for 4 with two runs while senior 1B Ashley Marchese (Patchogue, NY) batted 2 for 4 with two RBI and two runs to lead the Pioneers. Softy and senior DH Shannon Kulnis (Flemington, NJ) each batted 2 for 4 with one run and one RBI.

Freshman P Elissa Boris (Gardner, MA), sophomore 3B Hilary Hopkins (Poway, CA) and freshman 1B Caelyn Ford (Dracut, MA) each had hits for UMass Lowell.

Boris took the loss as she allowed 11 hits, six runs and no walks while striking out one to slip to 2-11. Kiser improved to 9-1 with the win as she yielded three hits and two walks while striking out eight.

Marchese broke a 0-0 drought in the third inning with a two-run shot to left center while Softy and Kulnis hit consecutive solo shots to centerfield for a 4-0 cushion in the fourth.

Kerry Fisher and Katie Fisher highlighted the fifth with a sac fly and an RBI single, respectively.
