WALTHAM, Mass. (Mar. 28, 2009) – Rob Finneran (Garden City, N.Y.) struck out seven over eight innings on to earn the win as Bentley completed a doubleheader sweep of UMass Lowell, 5-3, Saturday afternoon in Northeast-10 baseball action at DeFelice Field.
The Falcons have won six straight and improve to 14-9 overall and 5-1 in league play. The River Hawks have dropped two straight and fall to 11-6 overall and 4-3 in NE-10 play.
Finneran worked eight innings on the mound, striking out seven and walking just two. He allowed three runs, all earned, on 10 hits. He improved to 3-0.
The teams traded runs in the second and fourth innings – each score two runs in the second and one in the fourth. But Bentley plated two more runs in the eighth to earn its second 5-3 win of the day.
The River Hawks scored their two, first inning runs on three singles and a walk. Connor Burnham plated the two runs with a single through the right side. Luke Wallace (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) and Peter Onorato (Clearance Center, N.Y.) scored on the two-run single.
The Falcons responded in the bottom of the second. After one hit and one error designated hitter Jeff Eldridge (Danvers, Mass.) singled home Charlie Pagliarulo (Medford, Mass.) and Ross Curley (Lexington, Mass.). Pagliarulo doubled to lead off the inning. Curley reached on an error.
UML took its second lead of the game in the top of the fourth. Wallace opened the inning with a single. He scored two batters later when Matt Lawlor grounded out.
Bentley wasted little time to tie the game plating its third run of the game in the bottom of the fourth. Curley led off the inning and reached on an error for the second straight plate appearance. He scored two batters later on Mark Lane’s (Tyngsboro, Mass.) single through the right side.
The Falcons scored two more runs in the bottom of the eighth on three hits and one UML error. Pagliarulo and Lane each had RBI hits in the eighth.
Jack Leathersich (Beverly, Mass.) suffered his first loss of the season to fall to 3-1. He allowed four unearned runs on six hits in seven innings. He struck out eight.
Matt Sherman (Longmeadow, Mass.) worked a scoreless ninth to earn his second save of the day and fifth of the year.
UMass Lowell and Bentley meet again Monday afternoon at LeLacheur Park. The game was originally scheduled for Sunday afternoon, but was moved to Monday because of forecasted inclement weather. Monday’s game will start at 3:30 p.m.
