Volleyball: River Hawks Sweep St. Rose, Improve to 5-1 in NE-10

UMass Lowell volleyball is firing on all cylinders, beating St. Rose College in three sets to earn its 10th win overall and improve to 5-1 in the Northeast-10. The River Hawks were led by senior setter Nichole Rondeau (Dracut, MA) who had 24 assists, six digs and three aces.

The match scores were 25-11, 25-14 and 25-14.

UMass Lowell moves to 10-6 on the season and 5-1 in conference play, its third consecutive NE-10 win. The Golden Knights slip to 10-7 overall and 1-4 in the conference.

The River Hawks never trailed in the match as Rondeau took control from the start, acing her first serve. She would get another ace on her third serve and UMass Lowell jumped out to a 6-0 lead. The River Hawks hit with great accuracy, earning a team .414 attack percentage in the set. St. Rose was limited to just 11 points, giving the River Hawks a 1-0 advantage.

Rondeau started the second set with more of the same, guiding UMass Lowell to a 6-0 lead again and serving an ace in that stretch. The River Hawk defense limited the Golden Knights again, forcing them to a .000 hitting percentage and just 14 points.

It appeared to be de je vu as Rondeau served the River Hawks to a 5-0 start in the third set, before St. Rose notched a point to make it 5-1. UMass Lowell responded by reeling off five more points to lead 10-1 and force the Golden Knights to call a timeout to regroup. The River Hawks' ball placement caused havoc for St. Rose and in the third set the Golden Knights hit with a -.188 attack percentage, sealing the sweep.

Vicky Wong (Tewksbury, MA) led UMass Lowell with 10 kills and 10 digs, the lone player to reach a double-double. Sarah Coscia (Pittsfield, MA) stayed hot with eight kills, three digs and two blocks. Jillian Hadder (Yucaipa, CA) appeared to be in the right position every time, effortlessly tallying nine kills and eight digs.

The River Hawks have one match remaining this weekend as LeMoyne arrives in Lowell tomorrow for a 1 p.m. start in the Costello Gym. UMass Lowell has won five of its last seven matches and looks to climb further up the NE-10 standings.
