No. 5 River Hawks Down Saint Anselm, 8-1

The No. 5 UMass Lowell River Hawks (13-3, 5-2 NE-10) defeated the Hawks of Saint Anselm (1-13, 0-7 NE-10), 8-1, on Thursday afternoon in conference action in Manchester, NH.

Eight different River Hawks netted goals on the afternoon, while three more grabbed assists. The River Hawks were back in their offensive groove, outshooting the Hawks 25-8 and tallying four goals in each half. With the win, UMass Lowell completed its season sweep of Saint Anselm, outscoring the Hawks 17-2 in the two-game series.

Northeast-10 Player of the Week Sammy Macy (Tewksbury, MA) opened scoring in the seventh minute of play (6:04), converting a pass from defender Annie Hansbury (Plaistow, NH). Senior co-captain Jaci Moulton (Baldwinville, MA) followed up just over three minutes later with her sixth goal of the year in the 10th minute of play (9:24).

Senior defender Ashley Smith (Killingworth, CT) earned her first of two assists on the night, dishing the ball to junior Lizzy Ales (Arlington, MA) to make it a 3-0 game in the 25th minute of play (24:16). Junior Katie Enaire (Amesbury, MA) tallied her 13th of the year, an unassisted score, in the 31st minute of play (30:43) to close out River Hawk scoring in the first half.

It wasn't long into the second, though, before UMass Lowell struck again. This time midfielder Liz Day (North Andover, MA) scored in the 38th minute of play (37:06). Senior Molly Clay (Rockport, MA) followed closely behind, tallying her fifth of the year in the 40th minute of play (39:52), assisted by Smith.

Rookie Emily Painten (Walpole, MA) netted her second tally of the year, following through on a pass from Hansbury in the 45th minute of play (44:13), making it a 7-0 game.

Less than two minutes later, freshman Cassie-Raye Stuart (North Kingstown, RI) scored her first collegiate goal, in the 46th minute of play (45:58), to give the River Hawks the 8-0 advantage.

Saint Anselm refused to go down without a fight though, as sophomore Sara Bassett (Stoneham, MA) scored her third goal of the year in the 56th minute of play (55:22) to make it an 8-1 final.

All three River Hawk goalkeepers saw action on the afternoon, as Amy Carbon (Bellingham, MA) played 35:00 of shutout field hockey to start the game. Kate Hickey (Medway, MA) allowed the lone Saint Anselm goal in her 23:15 of play. Freshman Taylor Conners (Watertown, MA) played for the first time in her collegiate career, clocking 11:45 of playing time and stopping the only shot she faced.

Next up, the River Hawks head to Rindge, NH on Saturday for an NE-10 game against Franklin Pierce at 11:00 a.m.
