The River Hawk Report - Field Hockey Falls to Stonehill - October 14, 2009

The No. 5 UMass Lowell River Hawks (12-3, 4-2 NE-10) fell to the No. 4 Skyhawks of Stonehill College (12-3, 6-1 NE-10) on Tuesday evening by a score of 3-1, in Northeast-10 action on Cushing Field.

Junior forward Sammy Macy (Tewksbury, MA) tallied the lone River Hawk goal of the night, bringing UMass Lowell to within one in the second, but the Skyhawks held onto their early lead and never looked back.

Stonehill's Claire Hourihan (East Amherst, NY) opened scoring, as teammate Lindsay Pinkham (Skowhegan, ME) grabbed a rebound and got the pass off for Hourihan to slide it behind UMass Lowell's Amy Carbon (Bellingham, MA) in the ninth minute of play (8:13).

The final three goals of the game came in the second half, as Stonehill standout Jackie Ladino (North Dartmouth, MA) made it a 2-0 game in the 46th minute of play (45:15). She swiped the rebound off a high Carbon save in front of the cage for her 10th tally of the year.

Macy notched her 19th goal of the season in the 55th minute of play (54:46) after finding a pass from Kayla LeSage (Amesbury, MA) in the circle and converting the play to make it a 2-1 game.

Stonehill struck back, though, as sophomore Kathryn Nelson (Shrewsbury, MA) scored off the penalty corner in the 58th minute of play (57:55). Courtney Foley (Wakefield, MA) had a solid stick-stop at the top of the circle before Hourihan dished the ball to Nelson to give the Skyhawks the 3-1 lead they held onto for the remainder of the game.

The River Hawks owned a 7-2 advantage in penalty corners, while Stonehill outshot UMass Lowell 11-3. Carbon made five saves in the game.

The River Hawks head to Saint Anselm on Thursday for an NE-10 game at 4:00 p.m.
