LOWELL, MA (Sept. 2, 2008) – Jaci Moulton (Baldwinville, MA) scored two goals as No. 2 UMass Lowell defeated No. 6 Stonehill, 4-2, Tuesday night in Northeast-10 field hockey action at Cushing Field.
The River Hawks improve to 1-2 overall and 1-0 in the NE-10 with the win. The Skyhawks fall to 0-2 overall and 0-1 in conference play with the loss.
In addition to Moulton, sophomores Liz Day (North Andover, MA) and Sammy Macy (Tewksbury, MA) scored for UMass Lowell.
Claire Hourihan (East Amherst, NY) and Jackie Ladino (North Dartmouth, MA) each had a goal and an assist for the Skyhawks.
Moulton struck for both of her goals in the first half. She opened the scoring in the 14th minute (13:39), and made it 2-0 with her second of the night/year in the 23rd minute (22:54).
Senior captain Missy Seeley (East Hampstead, NH) assisted on Moulton’s first tally. Junior Molly Clay (Rockport, MA) earned the assist on Moulton’s second strike.
Just before the first half ended, Hourihan cut the UML lead in half with her first of the year at the 34:45 mark. Ladino earned the assist.
Day and Macy each added their first goal of the season as the River Hawks built their lead to 4-1 early in the second half. Day struck just 34 seconds into the second half with an assist from senior captain Michelle Harrington (Rockport, MA). And Macy made it 4-1 at the 42:37 mark of the match.
Ladino and Hourihan combined for the Skyhawks second goal of the night in the 61st minute (60:49). Ladino got the goal; Hourihan earned the assist.
Danielle Dodier (Kensington, NH) made two saves in goal for the River Hawks to earn her first win of the season.
Courtney Osier (South Dennis, MA) stopped 11 River Hawk shots, six in the first half and five in the second half, but took the loss for Stonehill.
The River Hawks out-shot the Skyhawks 19-9 for the match. Moulton had a game-high nine shots for UML. The Skyhawks held the advantage in penalty corners, 8-5.
The River Hawks return to the field Thursday night (7:00 pm) when they travel to American International. Stonehill is next in action.
