River Hawks Berry Good in 81-68 Win Over Owls

LOWELL - Junior G Megan Berry (Ipswich, MA) scored a season-high 21 points as UMass Lowell defeated Southern Connecticut State, 81-68, Wednesday night in a Northeast-10 Conference women's basketball clash at the Costello Athletic Center.

The victory stopped a two-game slide for the River Hawks who improved to 7-8 overall and 4-6 in the NE-10 entering Saturday's home clash against American International College (2:00).

The Owls, limited to just six players, slipped to 5-11 overall and 2-9 in the Conference. Southern Connecticut hosts Merrimack Saturday at 3:30.

Berry converted 8 of 10 field goals, including 5 of 7 attempts from 3-point range while senior C Revital Carmon (Bat-Yam, Israel) came off the bench to score 16 points and grab seven rebounds in 23 minutes.

Junior G Rahshala Valentine (Cincinnati, OH) chipped in 11 points and seven assists while sophomore G Tamaria Menefee (Dorchester, MA) had 10 points, six assists and four steals.

Sophomore G Logan Lentz (Chambersburg, PA) and senior G Allyson Smith (East Hampton, CT) each scored 18 points to lead the Owls. Lentz also dished out five assists while Smith grabbed seven rebounds and converted 8 of 9 free throws.

Junior F Jacqueline Johannes (Southbury, CT) added 16 points and six rebounds while freshman C Sarah Schicher (Vienna, Austria) chipped in 10 points, nine rebounds and four blocked shots.

The River Hawks shot .529 from the field in the second half (18-34) and .507 for the game (34-67) while Southern Connecticut shot .385 in the second half (10-26) and .415 total (22-53).

UMass Lowell also converted 8 of 17 attempts from long range while the Owls struggled to a 4-17 clip. The advantage buffered Southern Connecticut's 20-5 advantage from the free throw line.

Led by Carmon, UMass Lowell outscored Southern Connecticut 40-26 in the paint, the bulk of her points on layups.

UMass Lowell led 48-44 five minutes into the second half and used a 12-3 run to take a 60-47 cushion with 10:16 remaining in the game. Berry led the surge with a jumper and a 3-point bomb.

The Owls cut the lead to seven (72-65) with 1:49 left on a pair of free throws by Johannes, but could muster no closer.

In the first half, UMass Lowell trailed 27-25 on a trey by Schicher with 3:19 left to play, but the River Hawks ended the half with a 14-6 run to post a 39-33 edge at the break. Berry led the surge with a pair of 3-point shots.
