LOWELL, MA – Senior F Natalia Mendoza (Haverhill, MA) scored the equalizer in the 57th minute as UMass Lowell and Assumption College played to a 1-1 deadlock Wednesday night in a Northeast-10 Conference women’s soccer match at Cushing Field. With the draw, the River Hawks stand at 6-4-4 overall and 5-3-4 in the NE-10 entering next Tuesday’s clash at Saint Michael’s (3:00). Assumption is currently 6-6-2 overall and 3-5-2 in the Conference and hosts American International Saturday at 11:00. Mendoza, who was honored prior to the match alongside senior M Grace Larsen (Newburyport, MA) and senior M Margaret Gonsalves (Fall River, MA), scored the leveler when junior M Jenna McIntosh (Johnstown, NY) volleyed over the defense to sophomore Brianne Bozzella (Wilmington, MA), who then tapped to Mendoza for the open net goal. Assumption snatched a 1-0 lead in the 49th minute when freshman F Jami Styrczula (Bradford, MA) took a pass from junior M Kelley DeWalt (Londonderry, NH) and steered a shot from the right side of the box inside the left upper corner of the goal. The River Hawks nearly scored in the 76th, when junior F Kelly Soper (Auburn, MA) broke through the defense for a one-on-one, only to have her shot tipped wide right by sophomore G Lauren Keating (Nashua, NH). UMass Lowell outshot the Greyhounds 11-5 overall and 5-2 on target. Keating had four saves for Assumption while junior G Jamie Gillis (North Billerica, MA) had one save.
