SPRINGFIELD, MA - UMass Lowell scored three goals in a span of 19 minutes in the second half to post a 4-0 victory over American International College Wednesday afternoon in a Northeast-10 Conference women's soccer clash at AIC Field.
With the win, UMass Lowell improved to 2-2-2 overall and 1-1-2 in the NE-10 entering Saturday's home match against Le Moyne (1:00). The loss was the first for the Yellow Jackets who slipped to 5-1-1 overall and 1-1-1 in the Conference.
All four of UMass Lowell's goal scorers notched their first goals of the year.
Three of UMass Lowell's goals came from the reserves as senior M Margaret Gonsalves (Fall River, MA) opened the scoring in the 43rd minute. Freshman M Kaitlynn McHugh (Winchester, MA) crossed through the AIC defense to Gonsalves, who settled inside the top of the 18-yard box and launched a shot off senior G Danielle Hodecker's gloves.
Freshman D Erin Fleury (Princeton, MA) started the second half surge in the 58th minute when freshman M Courtney O'Connor (Bedford, MA) dropped off a ball from 25 yards out, which Fleury roped just under the crossbar.
Sophomore F Brianne Bozzella (Wilmington, MA) scored unassisted in the 62nd minute when she tapped in a shot by Maddy Bissaillon (Merrimac, MA) which caromed off the post.
Freshman M Jackie Zani (Salem, NH) capped the scoring in the 77th minute when senior M Grace Larsen (Newburyport, MA) gifted her a through-ball which Zani tucked inside the near post.
AIC outshot the River Hawks 16-15, but UMass Lowell had the edge on target, 8-6. Junior G Jamie Gillis (North Billerica, MA) turned away all six shots by AIC while Hodecker stopped four shots.
