Macy, No. 4 UMass Lowell Blanks Merrimack, 5-0

NORTH ANDOVER, MA – Sophomore F Sammy Macy (Tewksbury, MA) scored two goals as No. 4 UMass Lowell defeated Merrimack, 5-0, Saturday afternoon in a Northeast-10 Conference field hockey clash at Warrior Field. With the win, UMass Lowell improved to 12-3 overall and 12-1 in the NE-10 entering Tuesday’s home clash against Saint Michael’s (6:00). Merrimack slipped to 5-9 overall and 5-8 in the Conference. The victory also marked the eighth shutout of the season for the River Hawks. Sophomore G Amy Carbon (Bellingham, MA) turned away two shots in 42 minutes while senior Danielle Dodier (Kensington, NH) went untested in 28 minutes. Senior F Jill Tierney (Newburyport, MA) opened the scoring in the 27th minute off a penalty corner from senior M Michelle Harrington (Rockport, MA), which she tipped over the pads of Merrimack G Emily Achilles. Macy scored her goals just under four minutes apart early in the second half, the first coming in the 39th minute off a through-ball from junior M Molly Clay (Rockport, MA). She added her second in the 43rd, an unassisted goal from the left side of the cage into upper the right corner. Sophomore F Liz Day (North Andover, MA) gave UMass Lowell a 4-0 cushion when she combined on a play with senior M Missy Seeley (East Hampstead, NH) and sophomore F Katie Enaire (Amesbury, MA). Senior M Heather Woodward (Ashburnham, MA) capped the scoring in the 57th minute when she deflected in Clay’s pass by Achilles. The River Hawks outshot Merrimack 24-2 overall and 19-2 on target. Achilles stopped 10 shots for the Warriors while freshman G Jillian Lewis had four saves in 10 minutes.
