NEW HAVEN, CT - Jaci Moulton (Baldwinville, MA) scored two goals as No. 3 UMass Lowell defeated No. 10 Southern Connecticut, 6-1, in Northeast-10 field hockey action Saturday afternoon.
The River Hawks have won seven straight, and improve to 7-2 overall and 7-0 in the NE-10. The victory was the fourth straight game that UML scored at least five goals. The Owls fell to 4-5 overall and 4-3 in the NE-10 with the loss.
Moulton scored two goals for the third straight game and is tied for the team lead with eight goals on the season. She is tied with Sammy Macy (Tewksbury, MA), who had a goal and two assists Saturday. Macy has a seven game point streak.
In addition to Moulton and Macy, Katie Enaire (Amesbury, MA), Jill Tierney (Newburyport, MA) and Abby Auld (Waltham, MA) scored for the River Hawks.
Macy and Moulton combined to give the River Hawks a 3-0 lead before the Owls got on the board. Macy opened the scoring at 29:52 from Missy Seeley (East Hampstead, NH).
Moulton scored the next two goals. She scored unassisted in the 39th minute and with an assist from Macy in the 46th minute.
Sara Winterbottom (Burlington, CT) got the Owls on the board at 46:06 with an assist from Grace Martha (Cheshire, CT). The goal ended the River Hawks school-record shutout streak of 406 minutes and 17 seconds. UML had posted a school-record five straight shutouts entering Saturday's match.
Macy picked up her second assist of the match at 53:58 on Enaire's sixth tally of the season. The goal was Enaire's fourth in the last five games.
Tierney added to the River Hawks' lead with her third goal of the season in the 54th minute. Michelle Harrington (Rockport, MA) earned the assist, her team-leading seventh of the year.
Freshman Abby Auld capped the scoring for UMass Lowell with her third goal of the season. The goal was unassisted.
Amy Carbon made her third consecutive start for the River Hawks. She made a season-high five saves to earn the victory. Lauren Zarrella (Morris, CT) made 11 saves for the Owls, but took the loss.
The River Hawks out-shot the Owls 33-11 for the match, including 18-4 in the first half. UML also held the advantage in penalty corners, 6-2.
The River Hawks return to the field Wednesday when they host Saint Anselm (7:00 p.m.). The Owls are next in action Wednesday when they travel to American International.
