Men's Cross Country: UMass Lowell's Montrond Highlights UMD Shriners Invitational

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA - Freshman Carlos Montrond (Brockton, MA) placed 10th in a field of 310 runners to lead the UMass Lowell men's cross country team to ninth place at the UMass Dartmouth Shriners Invitational Saturday afternoon.

The River Hawks, whose first team runners competed at the Iona Meet of Champions on Saturday, scored 204 points (10, 24, 41, 59, 70). Keene State won the team title with 85 points and was trailed by Coast Guard (115), MIT (118), Amherst College (121) and Trinity College (137).

The meet drew 41 Division I, II and III colleges.

Montrond covered the five-mile course in 25:22 while freshman Jeff Veiga (Lowell, MA) placed 24th in 25:35 to lead the River Hawks. Sophomore Greg Wilson (Chelmsford, MA) placed 41st in 25:56 while freshman Daniel Wang (Haverhill, MA) placed 59th in 26:24 and freshman Daniel Maas (Nashua, NH) 71st (70th among scoring runners) in 26:38.

Freshman Eric McDonald (Groveland, MA) took 92nd overall (88th) while junior Mike Carbone (Fitchburg, MA) placed 98th (94th) in 27:10.

UMass Lowell enters the Codfish Bow Saturday at Franklin Park in Boston.
