LOWELL, MA – Sophomore Stephen Potcner (Wilmington, MA) scored the lone goal as UMass Lowell defeated Saint Michael’s, 1-0, Wednesday afternoon in a Northeast-10 Conference men’s soccer clash at Cushing Field. The victory was the sixth straight for the River Hawks, who improved to 9-3-2 overall and 8-1-2 in the NE-10 entering Saturday’s home clash against Stonehill (1:00). The Purple Knights slipped to 6-7-3 overall and 3-5-3 in the Conference and host Assumption Saturday at 3:30. Potcner’s goal was his fifth in the last four games and increased his total to a team-high eight for the year. Junior G Ryan Richards (Holden, MA) stopped three shots to earn his sixth clean sheet this season and 21st of his career. Junior G Jason Burnett (South Burlington, VT) stopped six shots for Saint Michael’s. UMass Lowell outshot the Purple Knights 16-9 overall and 7-3 on target. Potcner scored the winner in the 83rd minute when an attempt by junior M Jeffery Danso (Worcester, MA) was saved, only for Potcner to tuck in the rebound. Senior M Matias Pietropinto (Leominster, MA) was also credited with an assist. Danso nearly gave UMass Lowell a 1-0 lead in the 67th minute when his effort caromed off the post. The River Hawks outshot Saint Michael’s 9-1 in the second half.
