Baseball: Saint Anselm Upends UMass Lowell, 3-2

MANCHESTER, N.H. - Matt Jacobs (Hudson, Mass.) had two hits and scored twice, but Saint Anselm defeated UMass Lowell, 3-2, Thursday afternoon in Northeast-10 baseball action at Sullivan Field.

The Hawks snapped a four-game losing streak. They improve to 16-29 overall and 11-17 in the NE-10. The loss drops the River Hawks to 24-16 overall and 15-12 in conference play.

UMass Lowell took an early lead with a run in the top of the first. Jacobs drew a one-out walk and scored three batters later on a Peter Onorato (Clarence Center, N.Y.) double.

Saint Anselm responded with a run in the bottom of the first to tie the game. Ben Gunn (Vineyard Haven, Mass.) led off the inning with a double. He scored two batters later on a sacrifice fly by Benjamin Waldrip (Medford, Mass.).

Jacobs again gave the River Hawks the lead when he singled and scored in the top of the third. Jared Notargiacomo (Newburyport, Mass.) drove Jacobs in with a single to center.

UML's lead held until the bottom of the eighth when Saint Anselm scored two runs without collecting a hit. The River Hawks issued four walks and hit a batter. Melvin Perdue (Jonesboro, Ga.) and James Garrigan (Plymouth, Mass.) each drew bases loaded walks.

Jacobs was one of four River Hawks with multiple hits. He was 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Notargiacomo and Onorato also had two hits. Taylor von Kriegenbergh had a game-high three hits.

Evan Kelleher (Haverhill, Mass.) was the only Hawk with multiple hits. He was 2-for-3. Gunn was 1-for-3 with two runs scored.

Neither starting pitcher figured into the decision. Nick Barese (Braintree, Mass.) allowed just two runs and struck out six in seven innings.

Dallas Nunes (Easton, Mass.) allowed just two runs on six hits over seven innings for UMass Lowell.

John Healy (Cranston, R.I.) got the win for Saint Anselm, improving to 3-4. Healy allowed just one hit and struck out one in 1.1 innings.

Todd Bartelson (Pepperell, Mass.) got the loss for UML, allowing the game-winning run. He allowed one run in 0.1 innings.

The River Hawks return to the field Saturday for a doubleheader at Franklin Pierce. Saint Anselm is next in action Sunday for a doubleheader at Stonehill.
